JOSEPH W. WISTERMAN, F GALION, OHIO.

BOX.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEIII W. WIs'rEa residing at Galion, in the, county of Crawford and have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention hasfor its object'the provision of a box which after being relieved of its contents may-be returned to the original consignor in a knocked down condition. 7
One object of the inventionis to provide a box which will'beinexpensive to produce and which when in use will be thoroughly raced against collapse.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a .plan view of a box embodying my improvements arranged for use; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; Fig. '3 is a longitudinal section on the .line 3+3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a transverse 44 of Fig. 2;
section on the line Fig. 5 is a plan view of somewhat different embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 6 is aside elevation of the same;
Fig. 7 is an end elevation;
Fig. 8 is a transverse section on the line s-s of Fig. 6;
Fig. 9 is a detail transverse section on the line'9 9 of Fig.
The invention contemplates the provision of side and end panels which are slidably interlocked so that they will mutually brace each other and preventcollapse of the box while it is being shipped with merchandise therein. In the drawings, the side panels are designated by the reference numeral 1 and the end panels by the reference numeral 2. Four side panels will be provided and some of the side panels will serve as the top and bottom of the box as will be readily understood. Each side panel will be provided with strips of metal 3 secured rigidly at its longitudinal edges and some of said panels will be provided with a strip 4 across one end. Each metallic strip has one edge projected beyond the edge of the panel to which it is secured and then doubled on itself, as indicated at 5, whereby a lip is provided spaced from the main portion of the strip. The meeting side panel will be likewise provided with a strip 6 at its longitudinal edge and the free edge of this strip will be turned outwardly, as shown at 7, so

as to provide a lip or flange which is adapted to slidably enter behind and engage the lip 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. Upon reference to Fig. 4, it will be readily noted that one edge of each side panel abuts the inner face of a meeting panel and the in- 6 are correspondlngly arranged so that if the end of one panel be brought in proper relation to a meeting panel and then slid longitudinally the panels will be held together by the co acting metal bracing strips and when all four sides have been thus brought together or assembled the several panels will mutually brace each other so that the box will be held against collapse while in shipment. To lend additional rigidity to the box, some or all of the panels are provided upon their outer faces with diagonally disposed bracadapted to be engaged under lips 12 of the bracing strips 4: secured upon the side panels. It will be readily understood that the cross strips 4 may be provided upon the side panels or upon the top and bottom panels and present ways or guides in which the end panels may be slid into position to of the box. The side strips 3 of the box may have their ends extended so as to be folded around the edges of the end panels and thereby prevent premature or accidental-release of the end panels dur- To facilitate the removal of when the box has reached its destination, said end panel may have its lower edge equipped with a flat bracing strip 13 adapted to rest in a grooved strip 14: secured to the adjacent end of the bottom panel of the box and at the upper edge of said end panel I secure a latch member 15 which is adapted to engage over a lip 16 on the top of the box. The inner surlng shipment. one end panel abut against the end edges of the meeting side panels of the box and a lock or other securing device may be fitted through the latch member 15 and the lip 16 engaged thereby so that unauthorized access to the contents of the box will be prevented.
- cardboard In Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, I have shown a box in which the extremities 20 of the binding strips 21 are bent laterally after the several panels are assembled so that they will fit against the ends 22 of the meeting strips 23 and will thereby efiectually prevent movement of the several panels in all direct-ions. In this form of the invention, diagonal bracing plates 24: are secured upon the end panels of the box and are constructed with longitudinal corrugations 25, as shown. The longitudinal edges of the several bracing strips will be provided between their flat flexible ends with the interengaging hooks or grooved members 26 and the lips or flanges 27 corresponding to the members 5 and 7 form, as shown clearly in Fig. 8. It will also be noted upon reference to Fig. 8 that in this form of the invention, the side panels are fitted between the top and bottom panels at both edges. This arrangement permits the parts to be more rapidly assembled at times although it does not have the same bracing and interlocking action as the arrangement illustrated'in Fig. l. Inasmuch, however, as the ends of the metallic bracing Strips are-bent laterally so as to fit over the meeting panels, the device will be effectually held against collapse and movement of the panels in any direction prevented. My improved box may be constructed of stout or similar stifi' material so that it will be light and may be produced at a low cost. The metallic bracing or reinforcing strips are so disposed that all edges or corners of the box are reinforced and no matter in what position the box may be I placed it will rest upon metallic surfaces. When the consignee has removed the goods contained in the box, the panels may be quickly disassembled by merely sliding them longitudinally so that the interengaging bracing strips will be disengaged and collapsed. The several panels may then be easily placed one upon another and the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the of the previously described knocked-down box returned to the consignor within a small compass. The box may thus be used indefinitely so that shipping costs will be materially reduced. 7
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A knockdown box comprising side and end panels, the edges of some panels abutting the lnner faces of meeting panels whereby all outer surfaces are flush, bracing strips secured upon the outer faces of side panels atedges of the same and each having one side edge projecting beyond the meetingpanel and doubled on itself toward said meeting panel, bracingstrips secured on said meeting panel and having lips at their edges to engage said doubled portions of the first-mentioned strips, a bracing strip secured to a side panel at an end thereof and havingv an outturned lip at its .free edge, a bracing strip secured to the parallel side panel at the corresponding end thereof and having its free edge turned outwardly and then doubled on itself to form agroove, an end panel abutting the ends of the side panels, a fiat bracing strip secured to said end panel and having its free edge seating in said groove, and a latch at the opposite edge of said endpanel engaging over-the li at the end of the abutting-side panel.
2. A knock-clown box comprising side panels, a bracing. strip secured to. a side panel at an end thereof and having an outturned lip at its free: edge, .a bracing strip secured to the parallel side panel at the corresponding end thereof and having its free edge turned outwc rdly and then doubled on itself to form a groove, an end panel abutting the ends of the side panels, a flat bracing strip secured to said end panel and having its free end seating in said groove, and
.a latch at the opposite edge of said end panel engaging over the lip at the end of the abut ting sidepaneh i In testimony whereof I aflix my signature. JOSEPH W. WISTERMAN. [11. s]
