Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it'known that I, JoHN J. MODERMOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodstown, in the county of Salem and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoe Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends the provision of a shoe attachment, being in the na ture of a sandal constructed to permit an elfective purchase being had upon the ground or slippery surface.

The chief characteristic of this invention resides in the novel manner in which the toe engaging clips are associated with the sole portion of the attachment, and an arrangement which not only permits of the relative adjustment of said engaging members, to accommodate shoes of different widths, but one which also aflords the attachment maximum strength at this point.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice forming the subject matter of the invention.

The attachment forming the subject mat-- ter of the invention is preferably constructed from metal that possesses the general outline of a sandal including a sole 10 and a heel portion 11. Rising from the heel at the rear is a curved plate 12 while disclosed at the sides of the heel are lugs 13. Pivotally mounted upon the lugs 13 are plates 14 which carry suitable buckles and straps 15 and 16 respectively, for securing the attachment upon the foot of the wearer. Manifestly the plates 14 may be swung into any desired position to allow the buckles and straps to be comfortably arranged about the foot. The body of the attachment is cut away'as shown to render the attachment in its entirety very light, although a plurality of transversely and longitudinally disposed strips 16 and 17 respectively are provided to afford the attachment with the desired strength and rigidity. A multiplicity of ground engaging prongs 18 are struck from the material and may be distributed in any suitable manner to permit an effective purchase being had upon the ground or slippery surface.

A pair of toe engaging members are associated with the sole 10 for relatively sliding adjustment so that the attachment may accommodate itself to shoes of difl'erent widths. The toe engaging members are identical in construction, each being of substantially L-shaped formation and the vertical flanges 20 have attached thereto suitable buckles and straps 21 and 22 respectively for securing the forward portion of the attachment to the shoes. The horizon tally disposed flange 20 of each of the toe engaging members issplit along transverse lines to provide a plurality of spaced parallel tongues, the tongues 23 being of equal length, while the tongue 24 arranged intermediate the tongues 23 is considerably longer than the latter. The sole 10 is slotted along each side as at 25 to receive the tongues 23 and 24 of the toe engaging members, the tongues 24 being arranged upon one side of the strip 25 provided by the slot 25, while the tongue 24 is arranged upon the opposite side of said strip. The trans- 9 versely disposed strips 15 are provided with a right-angularly disposed extensions which when bent toward each other unitedly define guides 26 through which the tongues 24, and 23 slide. It will be noted that the tongues 23 coincide with the transversely disposed strips 15, the tongues lying in face to face contact with the strips to afford the attachment maximum strength at this point. The tongues 24 have their adjacent extremities overlapped and received by the guide 28. The overlapped extremities of the tongues are slotted as at 30 to permit the toe engaging members to be moved toward and away from eachother to accommodate shoes of various Widths. A suitable fastening element 31 is employed to hold the toe engaging members in a given position.

While I have described What I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to this exact construction inasmuch as such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.

What I claim is A shoe attachment comprising asole and heel portion, the body of said attachment Copies of this patentimayibe obtained for five cents each, by addressing the .attachment to a shoe including toe engaging members slidably mounted transversely of the sole guides carried by the transversestrips for the said toe engaging members, and means for holding said members fixed in a given position.
