To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, MosEs VoLNEY Lm- DELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harvey, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dum -Wagons, of.

The present invention relates to vehiclesfor receiving and transporting material inloose form or condition which adapts it to i be delivered by dumping or discharging throughthe bottom of the receptacle, and 1 the invention finds its fullest realization .in such a vehicle in which the receptacle is pro- 1 vided with a double hopper bottom, and
particularly one in which each hopper bottom is closed by a pair of doors, the object being to provide for sustaining the load incident to a comparatively large mass of material carried without undue proportions in the doors and the mechanism for working them, and. without impairing prompt and complete evacuation of the receptacle when a the doors are opened; also to provide a single means whereby all the doors may be easily manipulated to closed position and may be instantly released at will to automatic 1 opening.
Further or incidental objects relate to thedisposition of the two hopper bottoms in a "manner to leave a space or archway extending intermediately throughthe receptacle,
and to locate the hinges of the dropping doors in such position thatwhen permitted to depend the doors will form vertical continuations of the walls of the archway on the one hand, andbarriers to the outward discharge of material and possible impair ment of the vehicle mechanism on the other hand. i
The invention will be fully understood upon reference to the accompanying drawing, reproduced from my original application, aforesaid, and in which Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, a front elevation and a side elevation of the receptacle together with mechanism for control of its doors, and the appurtenant portions of a vehicle upon which it is mounted; and

The receptacle 1% is provided with a double hopper bottom R R developed by the-internal crest R in a mannerto leave a central tunnel or archway through which to pass other vehicle parts or connections as maybe desired, and also to admitthe supplemental frame F. Inthe embodiment here shown, the hoppers R R are closed atbottom by the pairs of twin doors R.
The doors R are hinged at R, and are controlled by chains R passing through the thimbles R beneath the doors and havingtheir free ends so wound upon the shaft R that the doors may be drawn tightly to their seats beneath the hoppers R R whenever the chains are wound up upon the shaft, or they will be permitted to drop away from the hoppers and deposit the contents of the latter whenever the winding shaft R is released so that the chains may unwind. To
bring each pair of doors under the control of the chain with compensation so that both doors will beclosed L tightly although one door may reach its seat in advance of the other, each chain is doubled upon itself and has its middle portion anchored upon a bracket R at the rear of the receptacle, the
free ends/0f the chain R being attached to the winding shaft R in each instance. Thus the portion of the chain beneath either door may yield if the door engaged by the other portion should first come to aseating and thus permit the winding action to continue until both doors are tightly closed. I11 order to compensate for stretching or wear in the chains of the respective pairs of doors, the brackets B may be made adjustable vertically, as, for instance, through slot and bolt connection R (Fig. 3), so that both pairs of doors willattain the closed position simultaneously. In order to control the'winding shaft R it is ofl'-" set from the receptacle by brackets R fsecured between cross bars R and cOmple- .mentary rails R and provided with a ratchet wheel R normally held against unwinding by a dog R having spring R and pivoted at R while a lever R? fulcrumed upon the shaft R and carrying a resiliently depressedhandrcontrolled pawl R is adapted by its normal oscillatory movement to rotate the ratchet R and shaft R to wind up the chains, buthas a toe R that encounters and unseats the dog B whenlever R ever saidv lever is thrown down beyond its normal range of winding movement, thereby releasing the winding shaft and permitting the chains to unwind and the doors to drop, and discharge the material within the hop-- pers; The pawl R is positively'forced to *the ratchet wheel R by-means of the. grip and this acts upon the pawl throughthe medium of the spring R iwilth the result that motion in the grip lever R is not necessary as the pawl trips backward over the ratchet in taking a new hold upon the wheel.
From the foregoing description it will be I seen that the receptacle divides its load into two parts, each readily delivered and witheach do0r; that both pairs ofdoors are subject to a slngle manual control with means for insuring the seating of both pairs of doors; that the manual control exerts ample power over the closing to'insure tight seating of the doors and sealing thereof against escape of material; that the doors drop automatically upon mere release of the winding connections and open simultaneously to discharge the contents; and that when the doors are open they depend in position to" preserve the central archway and restrict the lateral discharge of the material.
I claim: I p H I I 1; A dumping sweepings 'receptacle'having a double hopper bottom with a pair of doors for each outlet and a common closing mechanism for all the doors, comprising a chain for each pair of doors, each having a fixed anchorage for an intermediate portion of its length and having its endsextending from the anchorage beneath the respective doors, and a common winding shaft receiving the free ends of both chainspthe chain anchorages being adjustable to insure simultaneous closing of the two pairs of doors,
