Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed February 18, 1919. Serial No. 277,845.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED F. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Draper, in the county of Lyman and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to staples and the primary object is to provide an improved staple which will be readily adapted for use in holding a wire or like to a post or which may be used in any capacity where staples are employed.
()ne of the objects of the invention is to provide a staple which is especially adapted for holding itself in soft wood from which it has been found the ordinary staple is readily displaced.
The invention contemplates the provision of arcuate portions bulged so as to obtain a firm grip in the wood in which the staple is lodged so that accidental or casual displacement of the staple will be prevented.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a device of the above mentioned character which is comprised of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction but durable and well adapted to withstand the of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the staple constructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like numerals indicate like or corresponding arts throughout the several views, the staple comprises the parallel shanks 1 and 2, the ends of which are sharpened as indicated at 3. The sharpened portion is formed by beveling the inner face of each shank as indicated at 4 so that the rela tively long sharp points are provided. The arcuate portion 5 connects the shankv portions 1 and 2 in the usual manner.
Intermediate the end of each shank portion is an outwardly curved portion 6.
These curved portions 6 are directly opposite and are preferably curved through an arc struck from the point in the exact center of the staple that is at a point midway between the shanks 1 and 2-. This facilitates the construction of the staple inasmuch as it may be curved around a circular shaping member placed between the shanks l and The outer surface of each curved portion 6 is notched and the materialadjacent each notch is turned outwardly thereby forming a plurality of prongs 7 on each curved portion 6. The curved portions serve as binding elements when the staple is driven into the wood and the prongs 7 serve as retaining elements so that the curved portion 6 ant the prongs 7 coiiperate to hold the staple in firm position within the wood in which it is embedded.
It will be obvious that the staple will have many advantages when used as a fence wire holder, and may be readily driven into soft wood without danger of accidental or casual displacement when a strain occurs on the wire.
Tlre foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference to what might be considered to bethe approved or preferred form ofmy invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A staple comprising parallel shanksconnected together at one end of the staple and having their opposite ends pointed, curved binding portions formed intermediate the end of each shank and curved outwardly to form binding elements when the said staple is driven into position, the said curved portion having notches, the material adjacent the notches being bent outwardly to form prongs for cooperating with the said binding curved portions to prevent displacement of the staple.
