UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EUGENE SCHNEIDER, OF LE CREUZOT, FRANGEQASSIGNOR TO SCHNEIDER & (3115., OF PARIS, FRANCE, A LIMITED JOINT STOCK COMPANY OF FRANCE.
FIRING MECHANISM OF GUNS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Le Creuzot, France, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Firing Mechanism of- Guns, which is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved firing mechanism for guns, and to this end it consists in providing a combined striker-carrier and firing tube holder for the breech mechanisms of guns comprising a plastic breech gas check ring.
It has already been proposed to provide the striker-carrier of such breech mechanisms with a head, in which the firing tube is engaged in such a manner as to produce on the one hand the proper insertion of the latter in the firing hole (formed in the movable head of the breech gas check ring) by the engagement of the striker-carrier in the shutter or other part of the breech block, and on the other hand inversely to effect the extraction of the firing tube case by the withdrawal of the striker carrier.
In known apparatus of this kind, the engagement ofthe firing tube is effected generally only along a fraction of the circumference of the collar of the firing tube case. The consequence of this is that in withdrawing the striker-carrier, the result of this movement so far as it effects the pulling out of the firing tube case, is not satisfactory, while also the centering of the firing tube case is not sufficiently assured.
The improvements of the present inven tion have for their object to avoid all those drawbacks. With this object, the firing tube holder is constituted by a disk fitting the front face of the striker-carrier to which it is jointed by an eccentric pivot.
This disk is pierced at its center with a lodgment for the bottom of the firing tube case, and is adapted by displacement about its pivot, to be brought into a position which allows the introduction of a fresh firing tube into the striker carrier, or the withdrawal of an empty case. A simple means of engaging the parts is provided between the firing tube holder disk and the strikercarrier proper. This engagement is preferably effected at a point diametrally opposite to the pivot of the disk.
Specification of Letters Patent.

App1ication filed February 14, 1918. Serial No. 217,184.
A practical embodiment of this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings in which:
.Figure 1 is a longitudinal axial sectionv of a gun breech provided with a breech block fitted with a plastic gas check ring, all being of any suitable known type, to which the present improved arrangement of combined striker-carrier and firing tube holder is applied. I
Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly in section, drawn to a larger scale, of the combined striker-carrier and firing tube holder, the firing tube holder disk being charged with a firing tube and shown engaged with the striker-carrier.
Fig. 3 is a correspondin end view.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2, wherein the said parts are shown in the position for allowing a fresh tube to be inserted or an empty tube to be withdrawn.
Fig. 5 is an end view of Fig. 4t. 7
Referring first to Fig; 1 Ais the breech end of a gun fitted with a breech block B comprising a plastic gas check ring C with a movable head D.
In the example shown, the movable head which is assumed to be screwed in a shutter E, comprises at its rear a nipple F for engaging the body of the firing tube case G. The shutter E has a lodgment for the engagement and assembling by any suitable means of the removable striker-carrier combined with the firing tube holder I. In the example shown, it is assumed that this engagement is efiected by means of a continuous screw-thread H formed on the body of the striker-carrier and adapted to engage in a corresponding internal thread in the shutter E.
According to this invention the firing tube holder consists of a disk I (preferably though not necessarily in a single piece) in the center of which there is formed a lodgment of a section corresponding to that of the bottom of the firing tube case.
The disk I is pivoted to the removable striker-carrier H by means of an eccentric axel-pin I this arrangement allowing of the disk being brought alternatively into the position shown in Figs. 4: and 5 for the insertion of a fresh firing tube or the withdrawal of an empty case, or into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 Where it is shown engaged With the striker-carrier before the Whole is screwed into the shutter E.
In the preferred example shown, the engagement between the disk I and the body of the striker-carrier H is effected by means of a stud. H fixed in the front face of the body H, and a groove in the form of' an arc of a circle I cut in the disk I. The curvature of this groove has for its center the pivot I of the disk, and the bottom of the groove is preferably located at a point diametrally opposite to the said pivot. Any other suitable device for securing the disk in position may be employed.
In the position of engagement the disk I is firmly engaged with the stud H asclearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
To bring the disk intoone or the other of the positions shown, it is merely necessary to actuate it by means of the firing tube case Gr.
As a result of" theconstruction the disk I is centered exactly in relation to'the body of the striker-carrier H, so that the centering of the firing tube With relation to the nipple F of the movable head is necessarily assured as soonas the striker-carrier is in its place in the shutter of the closed breech block.
The bottom of the firing tube case is'held all along its periphery in the disk I; this arrangement facilitating not only the maintenance of its centering during its insertion, but also the extraction of the empty case in the Withdrawal of the Whole mechanism HIG.
As hereinbefore stated, the engagement or hooking of the eccentrically' pivoted disk II may be effected by various means.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In the firing mechanism of a gun, the combination of a striker-carrier, a firing tube holder pivoted thereto,.to swing transverse to the axis of said carrier, and means for securing said holder in firing position on said carrier.
2. In the firing mechanismof a gun, the combinationnof a removable striker-carrier, a pivot pin located eccentrically on said striker-carrier, a firing tube holder in. the form of a disk mounted on said pivot pin, and a device on said striker-carrier for engaging and holding said firing tube holder disk in positionforfiring-;.
3.. In the firing mechanism of a gun, the combination of a: removable striker-carrier, a pivot pin located. eccentrica'lly' on said striker-carrier, a firing tube holder in the form of a. disk mounted: on said pivot pin, a slot in said firing tube holder disk, and a stud on said striker-carrier adaptedto engage said: slot for holding said: firing tube holder disk. in position for firing:
In testimony whereof. I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
