FABRIC-CUTTING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC APPELBAUM, a subject of the King of Great Britain, having resided in the United States one year last past and having declared my intention of becoming a citizen thereof, residing in'the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use,-

ful Fabric-Cutting Machine, of which the following is a specification. i

My invention relates to a fabric cutting machine, and consists of a reciprocating blade therefor, the same being adapted to be guided in its movementin a retaining member of the machine and is provided with spring tongues which project from said blade beyond the side face thereof and are in the accompanying drawing, but the-important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of said blade and adjacent members of a fabric cutting machine embodying my invention.

Extending downwardly from aid bracket and connected therewith is. the vertically extending leg 2, the lowerend of which has thereon the foot 3 which is screwed or otherwise connected with the based, thus firmly sustaining said leg in position. t In said leg is the vertically extending runway or passage 5 which is adapted to receive the reciprocating blade 6, the cutting edge of which is adapted to project forwardly from the front of said leg so as to be adapted to cut the fabric placed on the base, said blade being adapted to be connected at its upper end with the slide head 7 of the machine, whereby it receives motions in opposite directions, and so efifectsthe cutting operation.

On the inner walls of the runway are the channels8 which are in communication with said runway, as most plainly shown in Fig. 4, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described I The blade is formed of a flat piece of steel or othersuitable metal on the sides of which are the curved tongues 9 which are punched out of said piece and so integral at one end with said piece while their bodies extend outwardly disconnected and salient from the sides of the piece and so are resilient in their nature, and they alternate on opposite sides of the blade, it being seen that the blade is inserted in the leg 2 and mainly occupies the runway 5 while the tongues 9 occupy the channels 8, both tongues and blade being adapted to move freely in their respective positions while being operated by the slide head 7.

It will be seen also that while the blade rides freely in contact with the walls of the runway the tongues 9 ride freely in contact with the walls of the channels 8, but owing to the resilient nature of said tongues the latter press frictionally and resiliently against said walls of the channels, and so cause the blade toavoid lost motion and move true, steady and smooth and without rattling in the runway. is controlled whereby it is steadied in its motions and so the cutting of the fabric will be exact and uniform without'any possibleirregularity, throughout the entire length of the blade. The blade has a. plurality of cutting edges either of which may be placed in front, thetongues being intermediate of said edges, and the ends of the bladeare each formed with an eye or opening 10 whereby either end may be connected with the slide head 7, the blade being reversible forsaid purpose, it being adapted also to be inserted into the runway atthe bottom thereof on the undersideof the base.

Where it is desired to cut rubber or other tough fabrics the cutting edges of the blade are made serrated as at 11, Fig. 6, instead of smooth as shown in the other figures, but the bladeis provided with the tongues 9, the same as shown in said other figures.-
