a TED STATS PUNCTURE-PLUG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1919.
Application filed January 28,1919. Serial No. 273,506,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HUNTOON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Puncture-Plugs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a puncture plug, and it has for its primary object to provide a novel metal device for clamping onto the inner tube of a tire about a puncture so as to positively seal the same.
The invention consists of a base member mounted in a swiveled manner to the head of a screw threaded stem, the base member being insertible through the puncture of a tube so as to lie against the inner face thereof with the threaded stem extending outwardly through the puncture, and a clamping top plate having threaded engagement with the stem for being screwed down onto the outer face of the tube and force the latter into tight seating relation with the base member.
' In the drawings- Figure 1 is a transverse fragmental section on line 11 of Fig. 2 through a tube having the present invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an outside elevation of the puncture plug applied to a fragment of the tube.
Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe base member and the threaded stem attached thereon, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the base member composed of a base plate 2 and a sheet metal cap or covering 3 therefor, said cap having its edge turned up about the edge of the base plate and over the opposite face thereof as at 4. Within the inturned edge the outer face of the base plate 2 is formed with a groove 2' conformlng to the contour thereof. The cap 3 is provided with a central enlargement 5 to receive the head 6 of the screw threaded stem 7 which extends through the plate 2, the latter having a slot 8 extending-to one side of the stem into which the latter may be inclined to bring the base member nearer into alinement with the stem for insertion through a puncture.
With the base member inserted through the puncture and the threaded stem projecting through the latter, the base member is drawn up against the inner face of the tube and then a clamping or top plate 9 is threaded on the stem and brought down onto the outer face of the tube to firmly clamp the latter between the base-1nember and the top plate. In this connection it will be noted that the top plate is shaped to be conformably received within the inturned edge 4. This provision therefore permits of the top plate f0rcing)the tube down onto the bottom or base mem er, and also into the groove 2, thereby forming a positively tight seal, after which the projecting threaded stem is cut ofi substantially flush with the top plate.
The improved puncture plug does not require the washing of the surface with gasolene, as is necessary with the rubber patches, nor is the application of a cement requisite for the eflicient employment of this metal plug. The swivel mounting of the stem permits of the same being rotated While the top plate is held in alinement with the base member so that'the former will firmly clamp the tube therein.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent..is
1. A puncture plug comprising a base member formed of a base plate and a sheet metal cap having its edge turned up about the edge of the plate and over onto the opposite face thereof, said plate formed with a groove adjacent to and within the inturned edge and a central pening elongated toward one edge, a screw-threaded stem passing through the central opening and formed with a head swiveled between the plate and cap, and a top clamping plate threaded on the stem and conforming to the inturned edge.
2. A puncture plug comprising a fiat base member having a central aperture, a surrounding groove, a threaded stem swiveled in the aperture, said base member provided with a raised border encircling the groove in conformity therewith, and a clamping plate threaded on the stem and being of such size as to be receivable within the raised border whereby the clamped portion of a punctured body will be forced directly downwardly into the groove and outwardly against the raised border.
3. A puncture plug comprising a fiat base plate having an aperture therethrough and an encircling groove in one face, a rotatable, headed stem extending through the aperture of the plate with its head seated against the opposite face of the latter, a cap cover- In testimony whereof I have signed my ing the head and plate and extending about name to this specifioation in the presence I the edges of the latter over onto the first of two subscribing witnesses.
