Description

M. CHADDICK.
avwe ntoz M. Emmi/cm wow e1 rm; COLUMBIA rLANCIGRAPfl co.. WASHINGTON. n. c.
Patented July 15, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARK CHADDICK, OF PLANO, TEXAS.
DEVICE FOR MAKING VESSELS INVISIBLE.
Application filed November 8, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARK GHADDIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Plano, in the county of Collin and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Making Vessels Invisible; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for making air and water craft invisible, so that the same cannot be distinguished at a predetermined distance.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for making air and water craft invisible by utilizing a plurality of plates or sections secured to the sides of the air or water craft, each of the plates including a hollow body formed of transparent material, the rear wall of the body having its inner surface provided with a mirrored surface, the body being arranged to be filled with water, so that the reflected light rays from the mirror will be broken or diffused.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved device of the above character, which is durable and efficient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one that can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically de scribed, claimed and illustrated in the accoinpanying drawing, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the sect-ions or hollow bodies for rendering the air and water craft invisible, and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters, designatc corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 generally indicates improved means for rendering the air and water crafts invisible, which includes a body 2 formed of glass or other transparent material. The hollow body 2 includes a con Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919.
Serial No. 261,652.
cavo-convex front wall 3 having its convexed surface disposed outermost, and a plane rear wall 4 which has its inner face thereof provided with a mirrored surface. The front and rear walls are secured together at their side edges and at their top and bottom surfaces by an upper wall 5 and a lower wall 6.
.The hollow body 2 is filled with clear water 7, which tends to break up the light rays deflected for the mirrored surface.
The device 1 is secured to the body of the air or water craft, which it is desired to make invisible, by any preferred means, and the device is applied in sections or in one continuous piece.
By forming the device as described above, the mirrored surfaces reflect the clouds or water depending upon whether the device is used upon air or water craft and effectively hides the craft from the sight of 0bservers at a predetermined distance. The rounded surface of the front wall 3 prevents the sides or edges of the device from being seen.
While the improved device is especially adapted for air and water craft, it is to be understood that the same can be used to hide any objects to which the art of camouflaging has been applied and can also be effectively used for hiding troops from the eyeS of the enemy.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efiicient and practical; yetrealizing the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my inven tion as set forth.
What I claim as new is 1. A device for rendering objects invisible comprising a hollow body formed with a transparent concavo-convex front wall and a plane rear wall, the inner face of the rear wall being provided with a mirrored surface.
2. A device for rendering objects invisible at a predetermined distance comprising In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 7 a hollow transparent body having a conin presence of two witnesses.
cave-convex front Wall and a lane rear 7 7 Wall, the inner surface of the reeii Wall be- MARK CHADDICL' ing provided With a mirrored face, and a. Witnesses:
light diffusing medium arranged in the E. A. CARPENTER,
body, as and for the purpose specified. W. H. CHADDICK.
