UNTED STATES PA ENT ATTACHMENT FOR UO'NVERTERS.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1919 Application filed February 28, 1919. Serial No. 279,914.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, MICHAEL Zrrrnnn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements A in Attachments forConverters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to converters, and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an attachment for converters to set up the twyers in a regular or uniform manner when packing the ganister in the converter shell to form the lining for the latter.
A further object of theinvention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, twyer attachment for converters to facilitate the forming of the twyers during the packing of the ganister so that the twyers will not only be equally spaced in the ganister or lining, but will be of uniform length and extend in parallel planes throughout, under such conditions overcoming any possibility of the inclination of any of the twyers in the ganister.
Further objects of the invention areto provide an attachment for the purpose set forth which is simple in its constructions and arrangement; strong, durable and thor,- oughly efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up relative to the converter, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture A and operate.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrano'ement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
1n the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Fi re 1 is a sectional lan of a converter showing the adaptation t erewith of an attachment in accordance with this invention, the twyer forming rods being omitted= and Ifurther showing the twyers formed in the ganister or lining of the converter. Fig. 2, is a perspective View of the twyer 1Igod holder which is arranged in the wind Fig. 3, is a sectional detail, on line 111-111. Fig. 1, showing the adaptation with the converter of an attachment in accordance with this invention.
Fig. l is a view of one of the twyer forming rods.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the shell of a converter and 2, the lining therefor which is formed by packing the ganister against the inner face of the shell 1. The shell 1 is formed with a series of twyer openings 3, and the lining 2 with a series of openings 4, which form a continuation of the openings 3, and said openings 4 are provided 4when the lining 2 is formed when packing the ganister. The twyers formed by the openings 3, 4; lead from the wind box 5. v
The attachment in accordance with this invention for the purpose of providing the twyers in a regular or uniform manner co1nprises a rod holder and a series of twyer forming rods each independently of each other. The rod holder which is arranged in the wind box 5 consists of a block 6 conforming in contour to the shape of the periphery of the shell l, and formed with a pair of apertured lugs 7 at its ends, for the purpose of extending therethrough holdfast devices 8, to detachably secure the holder to the periphery of the shell 1, within the wind box 5. The holder may be of any suitable thickness and is formed of any desirable metallic material and is formed with a series 0f openings 9, which register with the openings 3, in the shell 1. The walls of the openings 9 are provided with threads 10.
The holder may be permanently secured to the shell 1, but referably it is removably connected in position so that when desired it can be detached and removed from the wind box 5.
The twyer forming rods, each consists of an elongated metallic cylindrical rod 11, provided intermediate its ends with peripheral threads 12, for engagement with the threads 10. As many rods are employed as there are twyers. The threads 10 and 12 provide for the adjustable securing in position of the rods 11, so that provision is made for the length of the openings 3 and the length of the openings 4 to be formed in the lining 2,
or in other words for the thickness of the ganister which is packed against the shell l to form the lining 2.
Vhen using the attachment, it will be assumed that the holder is secured in position, the rods are inserted through the openings 9 and 3, and extended the desired distance into the shell l, the ganister is then packed against the inner face of the shell l` and around the inner ends of the rods l1. After the linish of the packing of the ganister the rods ll are withdrawn and the openings 4 are formed-and which are a continuation of the openings 3. When the rods 11 are `adjusted they are secured in such position by the engagement of the threads l0 and l2.
Owing to theadjustability of the rods l1 it is obvious that the twyer openings in the ganister orlining 2 will be formed in a regular or uniform manner and of equal length.
What; I claim is l-. Anv attachment for forming twyer openings in the ganister of a converter comprising an apertured holder adapted to be arranged in the wind box of a converter and provided with openings registering` with the twyer openings in the converter shell, and rods extended through and secured in said holder and further extended through the twyer openings in the shell whereby the ganister can be packed around the inner end of the rods to form a continuation of the twyer openings in thelshell when the rods are withdrawn.
2. 'The combination shell of a converter provided with twyer openings and the cone verter wind box, of'a holder arranged in said wind box Vand secured to the periphery ofv the shell, said holder having openings 40 registering with the twyer openings, and adjustable rods extended through the said registering openings, and means for maintaining said rods in'adj usted position.
3. In combination, a converter shell provided with twyer openings, a wind box, a holder arranged therein and having openings registering with the twyer openings, and removable rods adapted to be extended through said registering openings and into the converter shell whereby the converter shell lining can be packed around the inner ends of the rods forming continuations of the twyer openings when the rods are removed.
4L. In combination, a convertershell provided with twyer openings, a wind box, a holder arranged in the wind box and having openings registering with the twyer openings, removable rods adaptedto be extended through said registering'openings and into the converter shell whereby the converter shell lining can be packedaround the inner ends of the rods forming continuations of the twyer openings when'the rods are removed, and means for maintaining the rods stationary when packing the lining around the inner ends of the rods.
5. In combination, a converter shell prow videdl witlrtwyer openings, a windk box, a holder arranged therein and having openings registering with the twyer openings, and adjustablerods adapted to be extended through said registering o eningsv and into the converter shell where y the converter shell lining can be packed around the inner ends of the rodsforming continuations of the twyer openings when the rods are removed.
In testimony whereof I'afx my signature.
" MICHAEL ZIBPLER.
