Application filed 35.2.1011 8, 1918.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wnnonnn L. GARLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented eertein new and useful Improvements in Fuse- Plugs, of which the following, taken in con;
fuse is visibly inclosed so that a blow out is quickly discernible, the parts being so in terlocked upon one another that they are retained in firm contact hythe threaded me tallic sleeve which forms one of the metal terminals of the plug, and the invention consists in the novel "features and combina; tions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
in the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe closed plug showing the fuse through the mica plate in the top; and Fig.
i 2 is a top plan view. of the two parts separated froni one another with the mica plate retained in one of said parts while the fuse is retained in the other. Fig. 3 is a plan view crthe mica plate. Serial No. 221,116.
Like charac ers of reference refer to cor responding pairs in the several views.
The numeral 10 desi nates one portion or member and the numeral 11 the other portion or member of the porcelain plug which are united at the L-shaped joint 12 by the metallic spirally corrugated 'or threaded hand 13 which forms one of the terminals of the plug, the outer surfaces of the parts 10 and 11 being threaded at 14 to fit the hand 13.
The parts 10 and ii are preferably made of porcelain and each has portions of the chamber or opening therein, that is, when the two parts 10 and 11 are united by the band 13 they form, as it were, a small porcelain receptacle having the groove 16 a spaced distance from the top around the inner walls of the chamber to receive therein the mica plate 17 so that the interior of the chamber 15 said mica plate 1 1'. The part 10 preferably has the inner end porten 1S thereon. This is attained by the angular shaped but which provides he extension 19 to one side heneath and the inner end of the part 11 so that the edge or" the extension 19 is engaged by the hand 13 when said hand is turned onto the correspondingly threaded outer surface is of the parts 10 and 11. i
The inner terminal consists of a metallic plug 20 in the shape of a capped pin with a split stem into which one end of the fuse -21 fits so that it may he quickly and easily inserted therein. The stem of the pinor plug 20 his within the hole 24 in the inner end of t is portion 10 so as to press the parts of the stem of the pin 20 together upon the end oi the fuses so as to hold said fuse therein, or it may he soldered within The opposite endof the fuse 21 is enlarged so as to extend out through the hole 23 in the side of the porcelain part 10 so as to receive the upper edge of the metallic hand 13 thercagainst. The flattened end may be turned either upward or downward and so engaged as to he firmly held within the hole 23 and formed so as to he brought into firm contact with the nietallic hand 13, or soldered thereto.
It is apparent that the holes 23 and 24 are both contained in the part lOsothat the fuse may be attached firmly therein While the two arts 10 and 11 are separated, after which said parts may be united Without disis always visible through through the holes 23 turbance to the attached fuse 21. Thus in assembling the fuse plug, the fuse is first attached to the pin terminal 20 and passed up and 24, the stem of the pin 20 fitting firmly within the hole 24 The end 22 of the fuse 21 is securely attached in the hole 23, the part 11 is placed against. the part 10 with the mica late 17 in the groove 16 extending within t e two parts and the metallic band,v 13 is then screwed onto the periphery of the two parts 10 and 11 and firmly against the end 22 thereby holding the two parts of the plug firmly in contacting relation and locking the mica plate 17 wit in the groove 16 of the two parts and bringing the band terminal 13 into contact with the end 22 of the fuse 21. It is apparent that the fuse 21 is always visible through the firmlv held mica plate 17.
I claim as new 1. A fuse plug comprising two portions having an l. -shaped joint therebetween allowing sidewise separation, said portions shaped to form a chamber therewithin having a groove around its walls a spaced distance'from the outer end thereof, a mica plate fitting within said groove to form a 'end hole, a metallic pin threaded exterior,
transparent closure for said chamber, the peripheries of said portions threaded, a threaded band to lit over said portions and hold them 111 contacting relation, one of said portions having holes therein one through the inner end and the other through the side thereof a spaced distance from said inner said hole in the inner end, and a fuse con: necting said metallic pin terminal to said threaded hand through said chamber and hole in the side.
2. A fuse plug comprising an L-shaped semi-circular portion and a second semi-circular portion fitting into said L-shaped portion to form portions having a chamber therein and a said L-shaped portion having a hole in the inner end and a second hole through the side thereof, a metallic terminal in said inner end hole having a split stem compressed by the walls of said inner end. hole, a metallic band terminal threaded to fit said threaded exterior of said portions to said second hole, a fuse having one end engaged in the split stem of said metallic terminal and the other end extending out through said second hole to be engaged by said band terminal and thereby connect said terminals, said portions having a groove around the inner walls of said chamber above said second hole, and a'mica terminal received in a round plug therewith, said" plate fitting in said groove to render visible the vinterior of said chamber while closing the same.
3. A fuse plug composed of two complementary sections each having a hollow interior so as to conjointly provide a chamber, one of. the sections having an extension forming an end for the chamber and the other section having one end seating on said extension, fuse in the chamber connected at one end to the extension and at its opposite end tothe side of said first named section, a transparent plate formin a closure for the other end of the chamber, and a sleeve threaded over said sections.
4. A fuse plug composed of two complementary sections each having a hollow interior so as to conjointly provide a chamber, a use in the chamber connected at its ends to one of the sections, a transparent plate secured to the sections to form a closure for the outer end of the chamber, and a sleeve threaded over the sections.
5. A fuse nlug divided along a line extending axially of the plug to form two sections separable by relative lateral movement, each section having a hollow interior so as to conjointly provide a chamber, a fuse in the chamber, a transparent plate forming a closure for the outer end of the chamber, a sleeve threaded over the sections to hold same assembled, and means to secure the plate to the sections so as to allow the latter to be separated upon removal of the sleeve.
6. A fuse plug divided along a line extending axially of the plug to form two sections separable by relative lateral a threaded sleeve encircling the members for holding same against movement, each of the sections having a groove adjacent the top thereof, and a transparent pla having its opposite portions fitting, in the respective grooves of the sections. I
7. A fuse mentary hollow sections each exteriorly threaded and having faces which meet in a line extending longitudinally ofthe plug to conjointl form a chamber and to allow sepmovement,
lug composed of two complearation tr ereof by relative lateral movement,
a fuse in the chamber, means to close the chamber ends, and a sleeve threaded over said sections to normally hold same against lateral movement.
In testimony whereof I have aiiixed my signature in the v resence of two witnesses. W 'NDELL L. CARLSON. Witnesses:
