IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,)3, dated September 3, 1872. I
Specification describing an Improvement in Fruit-Jars, invented by HENRY HOWSON, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
My invention has for its object a cleanly cover for fruit-j ars, and one which will prevent the deleterious action of metal and packing ing on the contents of the jar.
I attain this object by an improvement in, or addition to, the fruit-jar for which Letters Patent were granted'to S. B. Row1ey,December 14, 1869. This addition consists of a cap, D, of glass, earthenware, or other equivalent material, (see accompanying drawing,) having a flange, a, overlapping the mouth of the jar, and thus isolating the rubber packing d from the contents, the glass cap at the same time preventing the exposure of the metal cover to the said contents.
As in the aforesaid patent of S. B. Rowley, the jar has an external shoulder, 01, below the mouth I), a packing-ring, cl, on the shoulder, and a screw-ring, B, adapted to the screwthread on the jar for compressing the flange m of the coverA onto the rubber packing, and thereby securing a perfectly-tight joint.
It will be observed that the flange a of the glass cap does not bear on the rubber, reliance for a tight joint being placed entirely on the compression of the flange of the thin metal cover on the rubber packing. As regards the efl'ecting of a perfect joint, therefore,my combination possesses the advantages found. in the aforesaid patent of S. B. Rowley, while the overlapping flange of the glass cap excludes the contents of the jar from the metal and isolates the rubber packing.
Although the glass cap fits snugly within the metal cover, it is distinct and separate from the same, and may be removed when required.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a fruit-jar having a shoulder below the mouth and a screw-thread.
below the shoulder adapted to a screw-ring, of a glass cap, D, having a flange overlapping the said mouth and contained within a metal cover having a flange acted on by the screwring, all substantially as set forth.
