ABRAHAM 1v. LUoAs, or MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. a
MARKING-LIGHT FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed June 11, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM N. LUoAs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking-Lights for Locomotives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear and exact description thereof.
This invention refers to signal lights, more particularly that type used as markers on locomotives and carriers of like character.
It is the present custom to mark the opposite sides of railway trains, vessels and the like with different color signals to enable an observer to determine the direction in which the conveyance is traveling. To further facilitate this purpose lights of different colors are employed at night, while flags are used in the day time.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide a lamp casing which is adapted to be used on either side of a conveyance thus doing away with the necessity of a right and left.
Another object is to provide a lamp casing of simple, compact, and economical structure which is adapted to receive a flag staff when the use of the same is desired.
The invention in one practical form in which it may be embodied is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a 1000- motive showing the invention attached thereto.
F ig. 2 is a sectional view through the lamp casing.
Fig. 3 is a. plan view of the same with the hinge cover swung back, and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view through a portion of the casing showing the socket with the flag staff in place.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a container having mounted centrally therein a suitable socket 2 for the reception of a lamp 8. At two a djacentsides of the container 1, which is preferably rectangular in cross section, are apertures 4 closed by glass slides 5 carried in guides 63, said guides being attached to Specification of Letters Patent. N Patented [11y 15, 1919.
Serial No. 239,444.
the sides of the container adjacent the apertures.
Mounted on one side of the container is a magazine 7 for the reception of additional glass slides which are carried for the purpose of replacing the slides 5 should the same become damaged or a different color be desired. The front portion of the magazine 7 is cut out to enable ready access to the glasses contained therein and further to allowthe spring 8 attached to the side of the container to exert a pressure upon the glasses thus preventing breakage through Hingedly secured to the container is a top 9 having a cut out portion 10 at one of its corners which registers with the stafi socket 11 formed in the container by the partition 12.
It will be further noted that the partition 12 at its upper end is slightly flared to re ceive a down-turned lip 13 of the cut out portion 10, while that portion of the bottom of the container which is in register with the staff socket is apertured to permit water or other accumulation to pass through thus preventing the socket from becoming obstructed and at the same time preventing water from passing into the container.
Secured to the container in any suitable manner is an attaching bracket 14 provided with flanges at right angles to each other and suitably apertured to permit the con tainer to be mounted upon the conveyance. In the present instance the casing is shown secured to the head of a locomotive. It will be noted that the portion X of the bracket shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 is bent back to conform to the periphery of the locomotive head thus preventing wabbling and insuring a rigid connection of the casing.
What I claim as new is:
1. A lamp Casing comprising a rectangular container, apertures formed in adjacent sides of the container, glass slides adapted to close the apertures, a partition secured to the side walls of the container interiorally of the same whereby a stafl socket is formed, and a cover adapted to close the container, said cover being provided with an opening in registry with said socket.
shaking or jarring.
'2. A lamp casing comprising a rectangulaicontainer, apertures formed in adjacent sides of the container, glass slides adapted to close the apertures, a partition secured to the sidewalls of the container interioraily of the same whereby a stafi socket is formed, an opening in the bottom of said container and in registry with s aid socket to'p re 'ent accumulation Within the same, and a cover adapted to close said container and provided 10 with an opening in registry with said stafi socket.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 1 have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of Wis- 15 co'nsin.
ABRAHAM N. LUCAS.
