Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. lih, dated September 3, 1872.

To all-'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CU'IHBERT GUTHRIE, of Peoria, in the State of New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Fences, of which the following is a speciiica,b tion:

The objectA of my invention is to provide a portable fence, constructed in such a manner that, by means of a bowed post, in combination with adjusting blocks and rails, the use of nails and objections to many portable fences now in use are obvia-ted, while security, neatncss, economy, and strength are'preserved.

The vaccompanying drawing represents a side view of a panel of my improved fence, one of the bowed posts being removed.

A A are the base-blocks, which may be of wood, stone, metal, or other suitable material, in which are set the bowed posts. B is one of the bowed posts, in the construction of which I prefer to employ a round metallic wire, of such diameter as may appear to be appropriate .for the purpose for which the fence is designed to be used. It is bent, by

any means, to form an elongated U or a conformation substantially similar, the ends being rigidly secured in the base-block A.

It is desirable that uniformity of size and form be preserved in the construction of the bowed posts, and also that there be no variation in the distance between the prongs at the point at which the upper rail is set and where the ends of the post are secured'in the baseblock, this uniformity being important as con# ducing to convenience by avoiding any necessity of adapting particular blocks to particular posts, the blocks being likewise uniform in size and form, and the rails the same as far as practicable. In constructing the bowed posts, in addition to metal, wood and other materials may be used, and they may be made of any shape.

C C are blocks,the sides of which are grooved to conformto the post B, and are used to separate the rails, the grooves thereof being adapted to the size of the wire or other material, of which the post is constructed, so that when fastened in their places they remain securely held. They may be made of any suitable material and of any size, and employed as may appear desirable. If a close fence is required a single block is inserted between each rail; if an open fence, two or more may be so placed. D is a wedge, also constructed to conform to the post B, whichis used above the top rail in locking the rails and blocks, and holding them in position. E E E are the rails or bars, which are of any desired form and material, either end being of a thickness or diameter less than half as great as the distance between the prongs of the bowed post B, so that the ends of two rails or bars may be placed so as to rest side by side within the bow of the post.

I am aware that bowed posts of different shapes have long been known, and I am also aware that such posts have been used in combination with horizontal bars or rails separated by loops or blocks, and I do not therefore claim the bowed post B and bars or rails E when used in any manner without the grooved blocks C, the peculiar conformation of the blocks G-to wit, the grooves in the sides thereof-constitutin g the distinguishing element of my invention.

The parts being constructed as above described, the fence may be set up as follows: rlhe bowed post B being properly attached to the base-block A, place the block so that it is firmly secured with the bow in a position where the line of the fence to be built passes through it. Insert the ends of the lowest bar to the right,and also that of the lowest bar to the left, placing them side by side, resting them upon the base-block A, and adjusting them at pleasure; then insert one of the blocks G, and repeat the former operation, concluding with the insertion of the wedge D, thus fastening the whole in place. To detach the parts, remove the wedge D, when the rails and blocks may be readily separated.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

'Ihe bowed post B, in combination with the grooved blocks G C and rails E E,for the purposes shown and described.
