FIREEXTINGUISHL.
ytion which will be cheap to make, easy to handle, and yet .of high efficiency, and to this end,y my invention consists in the fire extinguisher constructed substantially asv hereinafter specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the figure is a vertical section through a hand re-ex tinguisher constructed t0 embody what I now consider the best form of my invention.
My invention has to do With extinguishers of the kind using a solution of bicarbonate ot soda and sulfuric acid, which are kept separate until the occasion for use arises, when the acid is emptied from its container into the solution for the generation of the fire extinguishing gas that is discharged on the re. I employ an elongated cylindrical tank or receptacle 10, of a size that may be readily handled, which at one end only, for access'to its interior, has a mouth that is closed by a waX-sealed stopper or closure 11, preferably of rubber, after `the alkaline solution has been placed 'therein In the inner end of the stopper 11 is a .cavity 12, Within which is secured a stopper or plug 13 for the mouth of the acid bottle or holder 14, the neck of which enters said cavity. The plug 13 is secured in .the cavity, as-by means of a pin 15 that eX- tends transversely or diainetrically through the stopper l1, and through said plug 13, and after the mouth of the acid bottle (filled with acid) has been pressed over and closed by said plug 13, the space in the cavity around tlie'bottle neck and plug 13 is filled with wax 16 so as thereby to seal the acid bottle closure and thus preventeither escape of acid from the bottle, or access of solution to the acid in the bottle.
The acid bottle, at its bottom, is attached by-an eye 17, thereon, to the horizontal arm ot' an Lshaped rod l1,8, Whose vertical arm passes slidably through a hole in the tank stopper 11, ndabove the latter has a head.

' ,or knob 19 which, when the acid bottle mouth is plugged and sealed as I have described, is suiiiciently above the stopper 11 that when struck a blow by the hand, the rod will descend and carry with it the acid bottle, breaking the wax seal, and leaving the plug` 13 behind in the stopper cavity, and carrying the bottle neck out ot the cavity, and thereby, freeing the bottle, the latter, will be free to swing on its now sole .support on the rod 18 at its bottom, will invert and pour its acid contents into the soda solution. The location of theV bottle neck in the sealing cavity and its engagement with its plug 13, prevents the turning ot' the bottle on its pivotal connection with the rod 18. Preferably, the rod 18 has a guide eye 20 which passes over the discharge pipe or tube 21 Which leads from the interior of thev tank 10 to the outside thereof, said tube passing through a hole in the tank stopper 11, and its outer, or nozzle end being closed, as by means ot' a screw cap 22.
The discharge tube reaches nearly to the bottoni of the tank 10, and within the tankl is made flexible, as by means of a section Q3 of flexible material, so that its free end may automatically shift about in the tank so as always to be at the lowest point thereof no matter Whether the tank is upright, or inclined one way or tlieother, to give proper direction to the fluid issuing from the nozzle. This always'assures that the inlet end of the discharge pipe will reach to the fluid contents of the tank 10, so long as any is present'. My apparatus, therefore, is especiallyiitted for extinguishing` antoniobile fires since the stream can be' directed iiny,
der the car, or in any direction required.
I claim:
1. lA tire extinguisher having two chemical containers, one within the other, a stopper for the outer container having a cavity at its inner end Within which vis secured a closure for the mouth ofthe inner container, sealing means within such cavity, aroundlthe portion of the container therein, meansv tomove the inner container to Withdraw its mouth from saidl closure coinprising a rod With which said inner con- .tainer is pivotally connected, that. extends to the exterior of the outer container and a discharge. tube reaching from Within the outer container to the outside thereof, said rod having a Sliding connection with the portion of' the tube Within the container.'
2. A fire extinguisher' having two che1nical containers, one within the other, a stopper for the outer container, a closure for the mouth of the inner container, supported from said stopper, a discharge tube rmwhimr from Within the outer container to the outside thereof, an L-shaped rod 'reaching from said stopper `to and connected with the discharge tube, 'and a pivotal conneetion between the inner container and said rod.
I have hereunto set my hand.
