Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,944, dated August 27, 1872.
Specification describing an Improvement in the Manufacture of Whips, invented by AN- THONY SGHARFF, of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania.

, ing or otherwise, and thus molded into half sections B and B, Fig. 2, the said sections being cemented and tied together and then wrapped in a leather cover, D, which is stitched as usual to'form the finished whip illustrated in Fig. 3.
The ordinary process of forming cart-whips is extremely tedious and requires a skillful workman, who selects the proper quantity of tapering strips of leather, bunches them in his hands, and by skillful manipulation brings the whole gradually to a form approximating to that of a cart-whip, the strips of which havebeen previously coated with paste or cement being then wrapped with cord and with covers of thin leather, which are either wrapped or stitched, and the whole is finally covered with an outer wrapper of thicker leather, of
good quality, the edges of which are brought together and stitched.
By molding the interior or body of the whip in two half sections, which are simply glued and'tied together, and then covered with the outer wrapper in accordance with my invention, the usual inner wrappers can be dispensed with, and the labor of tying and stitching the same avoided, while the manufacture of the whips is much facilitated and cheapened, and the finished products are uniformly symmetrical.
Although I prefer to employ two sections only, it will be evident that the whips might be molded in three or even four sections to be cemented and bound together and afterward.

. I claim as my invention- 1. The within-described mode or process of making whips-that is to say, molding them in sections and afterward uniting and covering the said sections.
2. A whip composed of two or more molded sections, 13 and B, united and wrapped in an outer cover, D, substantially as specified.
