CHRISTINA IVI. VLASAK, OF TABOR, SOUTH DAKOTA.
NEST-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed August 8, 1917, Serial No. 185,078. Renewed December 21, 1918. Serial No. 267,883.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTINA M. VLAsAK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tabor, in the county of Bonhomme, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nest- Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in nest boxes and has for an object to provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive nest box, the parts of which are constructed and assembled in novel manner and are preferably of all metal formation whereby to pro duce a sanitary and vermin proof article.
lVith the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a nest box constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view there through along the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a section taken at right angles to lug. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box partially disassembled.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a nest box consisting of a top wall 5, bottom wall 6, rear wall 7, side walls 8 and front wall 9. The top, bottom and rear walls of the .box are integral and are preferably formed from a blank of sheet metal such as galvanized tin or the like that is bent in the requisite manner as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The front and side walls are similarly produced from a single blank of material and are secured to the top, bottom and rear walls by forming on the side edges of the latter inturned flanges 10 and riveting the side and front walls thereto as is evident.
The upper edge of the front wall 9 is cut-away semicircularly to provide an entrance opening 11 and is cut-away also at its lower edge to provide a drawer receiving opening 12, there being removably engaged slidably through said opening 12 an all metal drawer 13 the same being supported upon the bottom wall 6 and having a handle 1 1 by which it is manipulated.
Mounted in the box above the drawer and secured to the walls thereof in any desired manner is a nest bottom 15 said bottom being preferably of wire fabric having a suitable lining 16 and being further formed with an egg discharge opening 17. An egg when deposited in the bottom, passes through said opening and into the drawer 13, from which it may be conveniently gathered. To break the fall of an egg into the drawer, the bottom of the latter is provided with an upstanding conical member 18 the apex of which is located directly beneath the discharge opening 17, said cone receiving and deflecting the egg gently toward the bottom of the drawer as will be readily understood.
The bottom of the drawer 13 and also the cone 18 are provided with a suitable fabric cover 19 which forms a soft and yielding surface on which the egg may fall.
There is also provided for the box a pair of suspending cars 20 which are struck upwardly from the top wall 5 in alinement with the rear wall 7, said ears being provided with apertures 21 for engagement upon nails or other means driven into the wall or other portion of the poultry house. There is also secured to the front wall 9 of the box a perch 22 to facilitate entrance of a hen into the box.
What I claim is:
A. hens nest comprising a front section having parallel sides, a back section having a top and bottom, edge flanges on the back section top and bottom, means fastening the sides to the edge flanges, ears cut and bent upwardly from the top flush with the back section, the front section being cut away at its top and bottom edges, a removable drawer insertible in the lowermost cut away portion, and a nest bottom removably suspended between and by the front, back and sides.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTINA M. VLASAK.
Witnesses:
