Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIERRE CLERGET, 0F LEVALLOIS-PERRET, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR TO CLERGET, BLIN 8c CIEL, OF LEVALLOIS-PERRET, FRANCE, A FRENCH COMPANY.
PROCESS OF CASTING CYLINDERS OF INTERNAL-COMBUSTION ENGINES.
No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERRE CLERGET, a citizen of the Republic of France, and residing at Levallois-Perret, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Processes of Casting Cylinders of Internal Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the cylinders of internal combustion engines and has particular reference to a process for the construction of such cylinders having a jacket or casing of a metal which is a: good conductor of heat.
It is known to facilitate the cooling of the heads or combustion ends of internal combustion engine cylinders by using outer j ackets of a heat conducting metal and by providing the cylinder with cooling ribs of such a metal. Aluminium is the metal most generally used for the purpose, but its use offers great dilficnlties as regards insuring a thorough contact between the metal constituting the head or combustion end and the metal of the cooling part.
This invention relates to a process of extreme simplicity for mounting on. a cylinder or liner of steel or cast iron a cooling fitting for instance a jacket or casing of aluminium or other metal which is a good conductor of heat.
The process chiefly consists in casting the aluminium fitting direct onto a cylinder or liner of steel or other in aterial, the operation being carried out at different temperatures of the cylinder and of the fitting, these temperatures being such that the cooling brings about a greater contraction of the outer fitting, than of the inner cylinder or liner, so that the constituent metal of the fitting compresses the inner cylinder after the cooling.
In order to carry out the process, it is sufiicient to raise the steel of the inner cylinder which may be provided at the upper and bottom portions with a flange or projecting rib, to a temperature which must be suflicient to produce a certain expansion of the cylinder, but which must remain considerably lower than the melting temperature of aluminium. When the cylinder is thus heated, it is placed into a mold in which its outer surface will constitute the inner Specification of Letters Patent.

core of the mold, aluminium is poured in, and then the whole is left to cool.
While cooling, the aluminium which at first had a high temperature, will contract much more than the steel, and the fitting will effectually grip the cylinder which it will surround like a hoop. A thorough contact smooth or provided with suitable ribs or grooves and also provided if desired with water or air cooling devices.
The aluminium fittmg can be made of any desired shape, for instance with ribs cast on or cut out from the solid after the casting, the said ribs being capable of being concentrically or radially superimposed on ribs or grooves of the steel cylinder.
The constituent metal of the fitting can be aluminium or an aluminium alloy or any other metal, the only condition for carrying out the invention being that the metal shall be a good conductor of heat.
The invention is applicable to cylinders having either integral or detachable heads.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The method of constructing an internal combustion engine cylinder comprising a liner or inner sleeve of wear resisting metal and a casing surrounding the liner of metal having a high conductivity of heat consisting in heating the liner to a temperature below the melting point of the casing metal, and casting the casing around the heated liner as a core.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PIERRE OLERGET.
