Description
B. E. GRISHAM. HOLDER FOR RESISTANCE COILS APPLlCATiON FILED 00114. I916.
Patanted July 8, 1919.
amt/W3 BENJAMIN E. GRISHAM, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
HOLDER roe RESISTANCE-001135.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.
Application filed October 14, 1916. Serial N 0. 125,761.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN E. GRIs- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, Shelby county, and State of Tennessee, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Resistance-Coils, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to holders for resistance ooils'of electric circuits, and consists in the arrangements and combina-. tions of elements hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The inventionhas for its purpose to provide a holder for resistance coils adapted especially for use on automobiles, wherein the construction of'holder may be attached to any part of the machine or car' frame desired, and which will be securely held against loss or displacement.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a device of this character in which resistance coils of different sizes may be held and suitably shielded from the entrance of objectionable foreign matter, and from which container the shielding substance may be readily removed to replace a new resistance.
The invention is disclosed by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, whcrein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the resistance holder,
Fig. 2 a central sectional view thereof, with parts in elevation, and
Fig. 3 a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, 4 designates a cylindrical and metal container, having a closed end 5 and an open end 6 with a cover; said container is adapted to hold the resistance coil 7, wound on the laminated core 8 and forming therewith a unit structure after the well known manner.
The coil 7 adapted to be placed in the cylinder casing a, as shown in Fig. 2, and a filler, of cement or other suitable friable material. 1O closes the open end of the cylinder, fills in the space surrounding the coil, and
securely positions the same. Said filler body 10 1s adapted to be poured into the container while in a state of such viscosity that it will pour readily and then harden or solidify.
The resistance coil may be removed by merely breaking away said filler'body 10, which is of a character to break readily, and it will therefore be obvious that the resistance coil may be replaced Without requiring the cylinder 4 and attaching parts thereof to be destroyed.
The cylinder 4 is equipped with a pair of straps 12 and 13 appropriately soldered, or otherwise secured thereto, at the upper and lower ends, and said straps have projecting.
end portions 1 1 and 15, res ectively, that are constructed, as at 16, to t a bar or other convenient part of the machinery or car frame. 7 I
The clamping parts 14 and 15 are suitably a ertured to receive the two screws or bolts 1? fitted with nuts 18; and the wall of the cylinder 4 is apertured, as at 19, to receive a conductor wire 20, as shown.
It will be evident from the foregoing that the device may be conveniently attached to or removed from any part of the car frame, and that the resistance coil will be kept free from the influence of foreign substances by reason of the filler body 10. And it will be further noted that the holder and attaching means are of such construction that the same may be handled without requiring any special skill, and that the ame may be manufactured in large quantities and at small cost.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not wish to be limited to such features except as maybe required by the claim.
, Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A container comprising a cylindrical sheet metal casing closed at one end and open at the other end, a coil within the easing seating against the closed end thereof, a sealing compound filling the space surrounding the coil and closing the open end of the casing, and a reinforcing band secured to the periphery of said casing adjacent each end thereof, said bands being bent close to their respective extremities to form adjust- 5 able clamping members, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Memphis, Tennessee this 9th day of October, A. D. nineteen hundred and sixteen.
BENJAMIN E. GRISHAM. [L s.] Witnesses JOHN L. STOUT, JOHN W. FARLEY.
