CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
GIRDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1919.-
Application filed April 10, 1917. Serial No. 160,915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MEYER W. SGHLOSS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of New York, in the borough of Manhattan and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Girdles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to girdles intended to be Worn in the place of corsets, the objects being, first, to provide a construction for such an article of apparel which avoids the use of the busks and fastening hooks commonly utilized heretofore; second, which is constructed togive the straight front effect now in vogue; and, third, to provide an elastic structure, the tension of which, when on the body, may be adjusted to suit.
In the accompanying drawing, the complete girdle is shown in one perspective view. The girdle comprises a tic webbing A which will ordinarily be ten or more inches in width; and of a length to usual manner of applying The front of'the band is completely and perapproximately fit around the body covering more or less of the region aboveand below the waist line. This band is perfectly fiat when laid out. straight, it being without gores or darts and otherwise unshaped to the figure. The band may be made up of a series of longitudinal elastic ribbonsor narrow bands at sewed together edge to edge at a, and preferably the band is provided in the upper part at or slightly below "the upper edge with anarrow band or zone I) of webbing which is also elastic -but being of a less yielding nature than the main body A. This zone I) is intended to be located at the waist line when the garment is worn. The extremities of the bandare respectively provided with rows of eyelets 0 and are to .be
connected together by means of a lacing d,
which is threaded through the eyelets in the lacingsto corsets.
manently closed, but
is provided with a shield or pad 0 of inelastic material, such as cotton goods or any other suitable material. This shield is provided with a number of vertically arranged parallel pockets 7 in each of which is placed a bone or steel de signed to afiord a suitable amount of stiffenband of elasequipped atone point with lacings,
ing to the front of the girdle to produce the effect, when the garment is worn, of a straight front, viz, a front which does not curve outward above or below the waist line. This straight front effect is more pronounced byereason of the absence of anyopening at the front.
The lacings are supposed to be pennanently in place andthey may be substituted by any equivalent device, such as cross straps, which may be taken up or let out at will. The article is donned by first loosening the lacings, then stepping through and drawing it up to the waist line, whereupon the laoings are tightened until the desired tension is put upon the elastic band, and the lacings then tied. The garment thus applied permits shape, except at the front where the straight effect is produced.
Elastic girdlesare usually made of a definite size to fit the waist measure and the figure to retain a natural allow for any alteration of the waist size.
Should a mistake be made in the waist measurement or the girdle become elongated by Wear, it is desirable to have means for readjusting the waist size. Lacings are the best means fo this purpose and they are also advantageous in that no metal studs or projecting parts accompany their use which often show through the outer garments. By providing a completely closed elastic band the figure is given a smooth appearance and the garment can be put on readily in the manner above described by loosening and afterward taking up the lacings. L I claim: 7
A girdle comprising a flat band of elastic webbing provided with a zone at the region of the waist line which is elastic but less yielding than the body of the band, the extremities of the band having cooperating fastening devices and the band midway of its extremities being provided with a flat stiffening pad extending across the said zone.
