Application filed April 19, 1915, Serial No. 22,331.
useful Improvements in Steering Mechanism for Road-Graders, of which the following is v a specification.
My invention has relation to a steering mechanism for road graders and in suchconnection it relates more particularly -to the arrangement and construction of a steering mechanism peculiarly adapted for use with a road grader described in a companion application for patent filed by me under even date' herewith and under Serial No. 22,332.
In said application for Patent No. 22,332 I have described and-claimed a road grader wherein the body of the machine which supports the'scrap-ing or grading blade is adj ustable laterally and vertically with respect to the rear axle and also circularly or plvotally with respect to the longitudinal axis of the grader and wherein the blade is supported to turn in circular'be-arings, supported by said body. In my present application there is illustrated and described a simple and efficient steering mechanism 'e's-' pecially adapted for use in such a road grader.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the fol. lowing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which,
Figure 1, is a side elevational View of the rear portion of a road scraper with steering mechanism embodying main features of my invention.
Fig. 2, is a rear end elevational view of the same, and Fig. 3, is a top or plan view thereof. Referring to the drawings. 1, represents the body of the machine and 2 the scraper ing in the annular bearing 3. The rear end of body 1 is supported on a circular bearing 4: which is carried by the rear axle 5. The construction and arrangement of all these parts are more particularly described in my Specification of Iietters Patent.

Renewed April 29, 1919. Serial No. 293,581. I
gglgzpg-nion application for Patent Serial No.
For the sake of clearness certain portions of the construction of the rear bearing have .55 been eliminated in the drawings of the present application. The rear axle 5 is boxshaped and hollow with the upper and lower slots 6. This or a similar construction of axle 5 is prescribed by reason of the fact that it is desirable to support the rear bearing 4 so that it may slide or move laterally on the axle 5, as clearly explained in said application No. 22,332. I
The top and bottom of the axle 5 are exten'dedat the extreme ends to form at each end a frame or bracket 7 in which a Vertically arranged shaft or pintle 8 is pivotally supported. From the shaft or pintle 8 projects radially a stub shaft or axle 9 oneach of which a wheel 10 of-the machine turns. From the periphery of each pintle 8 also projects a shoitarm 11 and the two arms 11 are connected by a rod 12 preferably extend ing parallel with the rear face of the'axle 5.
From preferably the top of axle 5 and to the rear of the same, extends a platform 13 on which is mounted, preferably at the middle portion, a sector gear 14. ,A hand lever 15 connected at its lower end to rod 12 '80 described is simple and is so constructed and arranged that it will not interfere with the proper adjustment of the rear bearing for the body either-in vertical or lateral planes or in circular planes if required.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is, In a steering mechanism for road graders, a box-like hollow axle, a bracket formed at each end by projecting the top and bottom faces of said axle, a vertically arranged oted intermediate of its ends to said ar and having its lower end cond lever swinging 10; portin a vertical plane. eof I have signed my pivotally supported in each bracket, axle projecting radially from each an arm carried by each pintle and a ms, combined with a the top of the hollow locking pawl and a sector (1 platform, said hand nected with said rod, sai about its pivotal sup In testimony wher name to this specific ROYAL A. HAWLEY,
