To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROY G. Lnrrorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat Checks and Holders Therefor, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in bat checks and holders therefor, of the character used by railway conductors for indicating the destination of passengers after the taking up of the tickets, wherein a holder is provided adapted to be permanently attached at each seat of the car, and a series of checks, the holder and the checks having interengaging and interlocking means for holding the checks on the holder.

The improved holder comprises a base plate 1 of suitable material, having at each end an opening 2 for receiving a screw or the like to permit the base plate to be connected with a fixed support, as, for instance, the wall of the car adjacent to the seat.

Upon the base plate 2 holders are arranged, in the present instance, one for each occupant of the seat, although it is obvious that more or less might be used as might be desired. Each of these holders is in the form of a block or lug 3 having its side walls tapered and concaved, and having its end walls beveled, as shown, to converge toward each other away from the base plate, and each of the said blocks or lugs has at its free end and on its opposite faces transversely extending ribs 4:. These ribs are looking ribs, and it will be noticed that the free end of each lug is approximately diamond shape in cross section.

The checks 5 which are used in connection with the holder have the usual identifying data 6 upon one face,

and each check has near one end and preferably below the data 6 a pair of longitudinally spaced openings 7. These openings are connected by a slit 8, so that there is formed on each side of the slit and between the openings 7 a pair of tongues 9 for a purpose to be presently described.

This slit is of a length corresponding to the length of the diamond shaped head or enlargement formed by the ribs 4: of the holder, and the tongues 9 are adapted to be spread apart by the said head when the check is pressed upon the holder, in the manner shown more particularly in Fig. 2, and to look behind the head, to prevent disengagement of the check.

It will be understood that a series of checks are provided, and as the conductor or auditor takes up the tickets he will place the check on the holder. As is known, such checks are usually placed in the hat band of the passenger, where they are liable to loss and displacement, leading to consequent misunderstanding.

With the improved holder and checks, the check is connected with the car at the seat, so that there can be no chance of displacement or loss. The improved holder and check are designed for any purpose where it is desirable to check the passengers, in any kind of conveyance. It is evident also that the holder and checks might be used for identifying articles checked, as, for instance, hats and the like.

I claim:

1. A device of the character specified comprising a base adapted for connection to a fixed support, said base having a transversely arranged lug or projection having inclined side walls converging toward the free edge of the lug, the lug having a transverse head or enlargement at the said free end approximately diamond shaped in cross section for the purpose specified, and checks for cooperating therewith, each havmg openings spaced apart longitudinally of the check a distance corresponding approximately to the length of the head of the lug and connected by a straight slot for permitting the passage of the head of the lug.
