IMPROVEMENTIN BRUSH AND MOP HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,859, dated August 27, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:-

Be it known that we PATRICK OBRIAN, of

i the city and county of N ew York, and State of New York, and CHARLES- L. W. BAKER, of the city and county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush, Broom, and Mop Holders; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same we will proceed to describe, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.

This improvement relates to devices connect ed to the handle so that a brush, broom, mop, or sponge, or other scouring implement may be iirmlysecured in its meshes or clasp, and yet be easily and quickly released therefrom. The nature of this invention consists in the peculiar construction of the devices so as to render 'them more perfectly adapted for the above purposes.

Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is an end view.

In the accompanying drawing, a is a metal ferrule having a coarse screwthread, b, formed therein. The ring-nut c has a screw-thread thereon, fitted to and works on the threaded ferrule a, having link ears d on' each side, one opposite the other, to receive the hook or link ends e of the clamping-arms. The link ears d of the ring-nut c show the ears formed on one side of the center thereof, which, it is believed, will cause the mechanism to work more freely and facilitate in the manufacture. The screw ferrule, a is secured rmly to the handle g.Y h is an elongated bracket secured to the screwferruled end of the handle by screw "i, so as to allow it to rotate freely thereon. The slotted opening k in the face of this bracket is 0f a circular or curve form, and a little shorter curve near each end of the bracket, so that when the clamp portionm of the clamp comes onto the fabric or other material placed between it and the bracket, the clamp will occupy about a central position lengthwise over the face of the bracket by the cam action of one side of the curveslots, and firmly and securely hold the fabrics or other material in the desired position. The length of the clamp m is made about equal to the whole length of the bracket h. The ends n of this clamp are bent nearly at right angle with the clamp m, and again bent nearly into right angle with the arms o, these arms being bent curve-form and drawn together, and having a hook or link,e, formed on their ends, which connects it with the ears of the ring-nut c. r is an arm projecting from the side and near the center of the bracket, and is provided with a dog, s, by means of which, when the nut is turned up near the bracket, the clamp will be extended so as to receive the wood of a brush and firmly hold it between the clamp m and dog s, thus greatly increasing the utility of the holder for the various purposes that it may be desirable to use it, and the whole rendered simple of construction and cheap of manufacture.

What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A-brush, broom, or mop holder, consisting of curved clamp-arms o, producing a cam action, in combination with the bracket h, ringnut c, ferrule a, arm r, and dog s, substantially as set forth.
