To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM O. RENKIN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Oradell, county of Bergen, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvcmentsin Yielding Supporting and Vertically-Gruiding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for yieldingly supporting bodies, such as bins for containing powdered or granular material which can, be caused to flow into and out of said bins. It is particularly designed for use in cases where the vertical move-.
ments of the bin on its ielding supports are employed to automatically control the flow of the said materials.
My present application is a division of prior allowed application Serial No. 247,268, filed July 29, 1918, and shows the invention as embodied in an apparatus for handling and storing powdered =coal. In the accompanying'sheet of drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a branch or local storage bin for powdered coal with my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of one of the supporting cams and cooperating parts, some of which are broken away or shown in section.
Fig. 3 is a similarly enlarged detail view taken at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.
Throughout the drawings like reference 10, represents a closed bin for receiving and storing a supply of powdered coal-for neighbpring furnaces until such fuel is fed to thejcombustion chambers by controllers 6, 6, which deliver regulated quantities of the material in the storage bins to the furnaces served by them. Said controllers are preferably of the construction shown in my pending application Serial No. 204,788, filed November 30, 1917, and are driven through the belt and pulley and .countershaft systems 8, 8, or other suitable driving apparatus, from electric motors 7, 7, supported from the bins.
The coal is delivered through pipe 12, to cyclone separator 9, rigidly supported on framework 39, above bin 10.
According to my present invention thevarious storage bins are mounted upon yielding supports so that each-bin rises or falls bin. These elements are illustrated and descrlbed in the application Serial l lo. 24?,268, filed July 29, 1918, (Case G) of which this is a division.
' To enable the bin to rise and fall under variations in the weight of its contents, 1 support the same preferably upon a sill frame 37, provided withvertical guides 33, by which the bin is compelled to rise and fall in a vertical line on the supporting earns 41 and 42. These cams are fast on shafts 4:7 and 48, which are journaled on base frame 39. There are four of them for each bin, two on each shaft. The shafts 47, 48, have oppositely extending crank arms 43 and 44:, which are connected by connect ing' rods 45, adjustable by means of turn: buckle 49. The cams have flanges 15 and 16., which overlap the sill 37, and thus prevent lateral movement of the bin. One or more contents permit or compel the springs all to expander contract. The bin is of course supplied with some kind of a flexible or telescoping connection to the conduit sys tem and rigidly supported separator 9, as indicated at 50.

The cams have flat surfaces 35, on which the flat surfaces of the under portions of sills 87, may rest when the bin is in its lowermost predetermined position, and other flat surfaces 36, which strike against vertical guides 38, when the bin is in its highest predetermined position. These two features of construction serve as stops limiting the downward movement of the bin and the tip-- ward-rotation of the cams.

If, on the other hand, the bin should rise above the predetermined limit of upward-motion the other'fiat surfaccsa36, of the cams will strike against guides 38, and the cams thereby be prevented from being reversed. During normal operation of the apparatus, between these limits, the vertical guides 38, bear against the round portions of the cams so that the guiding contact is uniformly and continuously maintained as the bin rises and falls and the cams turn. This action being supplemented by that of cam flanges 15, 16, on sills 37, the vertical alinement of all bin positions is assured.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A yieldin supported storage bin for pulverized fue and the like which comprises in combination the bin, a base frame, means for guidin the bin toward and from said base frame along yiertical lines, a series of cams journaled on said frame and sup porting the lbin, connecting mechanism whereby all said cams are compelled to move 'in --unison, and one or more compression springs rhounted on the frame and bearing on the under side,of certain of the cams.
2. A combination such as set forth in claim 1 in which each spring has a rocking bearing on its cooperating cam.-
3. A combination such as set out in claim 1, in which the means for guiding the bin comprise sills for supporting the bin,which sills reston the cams, and side flanges on Y, the cams engaging the sides of the sills.
4:. In an apparatus for yieldingly supporting' a superifhposed body the combination,
' with a supporting foundation, of a cam journaled on said foundation about ahorizontal axis, a horizontal, flat bearing attached to the supported body and. cooperat ing with the-cam, and spring means tending to rotate the cam in'a direction to lift the body, the cam having a flat face on which theabove mentioned fiat bearing may rest when the body is in a predetermined position.
In an apparatus for yieldingly supporting a superimposed body the combination, with a support-in foundation, of a cam journaled on said foundation about a vertical axis, a vertical, fiat bearing attached to the supported body and cooperating with the cam, and spring means ten ing to rotate the cam in a direction to lift the body, the cam having a-fiat face on which the above mentioned fiat bearing may rest when the body is in a predetermined position.
6. In an apparatus for yieldin ly supporting and vertically guiding a body the combination, with said body and a supporting foundation, of a plurality of cams journaled in saidfoundation on parallel horizontal axes and connected together for synchronous motion, and on which cams rest the body to be supported, a flat vertical guide' bearing on the supported body resting against a circular surface rotating with each cam, one or more of these bearings being on one side of one cam, and another upon the opposite side of another cam, flanges 0n the cams engaging vertical surfaces on the supported body which are at right angles to the first above mentioned guide bearings, and means for rocking the cams.
7. The con'ibination, with a movable body and a support limiting the movement of said body in one direction, of a plurality of cams journaled in the support on parallel-axes and bearing against the body, means for rotating said cams, and guiding means comprising flanges on the .cams perpendicular to the axes thereof engaging opposite sides of the body, and projections from the body having parallel faces at right angles to the cam flanges engaging cylindrical portions of the cams on opposite sides.
