STERN-TUBE AND ITS STUFFING-BX.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JUNJI' FUKAocitizen of Japan, residing at No. 1A, Rokubancho, Kobe, Japan, have invented certain ne-w and 5 useful lmrovements in Stern-Tubes and Their Stu ng-Boxes; and l do hereby declare the following `'to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 'it appertains tol make and use the same.
. l The title of the invention. i Stern tubes and their stuiiing boxes. l Tite natureof the invention mal its object.
This invention relates toA stern tubes and' their stufling boxes, in which a passage or passages vfrom the external stuiiing box of a stern tube to the shafttunnel of the ship is provided in orderto lead `away the oil and sea water leaked into the stuliing box, and
lubricating' oil and to protect the propeller shaft `from lcorrosion caused by the leaked sea water. The accompanying drawings show an ex ample of the arrangement according to the invention. The Figure 1 is a sectional ele- 'vation vof the stern tube, and the Fig. 2 is a detail of the stufiing box.l Y
lin the Fig. 1, (a) is a propel-ler shaft, (b) is a stern tube that is disposedl in an opening inthe hull ofthe ship and serves as supporting means for the. shaft a, (6') is a stern tube bush, (c) is a stuffing box,
and (e) is a packing ring, which is shown between the tube (d) and therings (e) A(e) are filled with packings (174). The rib (r) of the stuliingboxlc) keeps the sea water leaked. into the box throu l1 the clearances., between (c) and (e) and e) and (d) from mixing with the oil leaked out from the clearances between (j) and (e) and (al) and (e), and same collectsV the two liquids sep arately at the bottom part of the box.
The liquids which leak into the stung box are led into the ship by some suitable means, and l have illustrated hereinI one desirable embodiment of such means., From Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 24, 1919i;I Application `tiled Hay 8,1918. 4Serial No. 233,391.
l the bottom part of the box (c) two passages pipes, and the two passages may be substituted by a single passage, the oil and the sea water being led together into the shaft tunnel where they are separated from each other. The stuffing box and the passages (fin), (n), (m) and (n) can be cleaned `with high pressure water or air which is Ato be forced -in through the air pipe (p). 1t has forits object to restore the leaked'l The designs of the arrangement may be altered asy far as they .are compatible with' the principle of the invention.
ship liquid which leaks into said box.
2. ln a ship, the combination with a propeller shaft, of a stufling box therefor comprising packing, and means for leading into the ship liquid that leaks past said packing into the stuliing box.Y
3. lin a ship, the combination with a stern tube, of a propeller shaft passing there through, a'stulling box for `said shaft comprising packing, Land means comprising a passage or passages for collect-ing sea water and oil leaking past said packing and leading such water and oil through said tube into the ship.
d. ln a ship, the combination with a stern tube, of a propeller shaft passing therethrough, a stufling box for said shaft, comprising packing, and means `for separately collecting the sea Water and the oil leaking past said packing into said box, and means,
into the ship.
5. lln a ship, the combination witha stern leading liquid fromvsaid collecting means v tube and a stuiiing box, of means for lead'- ing into the ship the sea Water and oil leaking into, said box, such means comprising a passage orpassages extending through the Wall of the stern tube. t
6. In a ship, the combination with a stern tube and a stuffing box, of means for leading into the ship liquid leaking into said box, and means for maintaining a suitable air pressure in said stufng box.
7. In a ship, the combination with a stern tube and a stuffing box, of means for leading into the ship Water and oil leaking into said box, and a passage for supplying air to said stuiing box, said passage being adapted and arranged for supplying l'lud under pressure to said stuffing box and the means for leading sea water and oil therefrom to clean such box and leading means.
8. The combination with a ships hull, of a propeller shaft, mea-ns mounted on said hull for supporting said shaft, a stufiing box for said shaft, said stuing box being disposed outside said hull and coperating with such supporting means, andmeans for leading into said hull liquid which leaks into said box.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
