Sewing-Machines.
Patented Aug. 20,1872.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
AUSBERT H. WAGNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,775, dated August 20, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSBERT H. WAGNER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewin g-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in
' which the employment of a detachable shoulder or lip upon the vertical side of the shuttle-race, and immediately in front of the needle-way, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A represents the horizontal and B the vertical portions of the shuttle-race frame, between or within which is formed the race C, of usual form. From the upper edge of the part B a plate, b, extends horizontally outward over a portion of the race C, and acts as a guard or stop to prevent the shuttle from vertical displacement. The needle-way D passes downward through the plate b, the inner faceof the part B, and through the lower part or base A, and has the usual form, except that within the part B. Said opening is extended forward, so as to receive a smallplate, E, which has the general form shown in Figs. 1 and 3, its edge adjacent to said needle-way being extended downward and rearward in a curve, while the loweredge of said part inclines slightly upward and rearward. The curved edge of the plate E is beveled outward, while its point 0 extends partially over the needle-way, and is recessed out upon or within its rear side, so as to form of or from said point a lip or shoulder, which re ceives and contains the thread, and effectually prevents the same from being moved forward by the shuttle as it passes through the loop. By means of this device, a failure to make a stitch by reason of the displacement of the loop by the shuttle is avoided, and one of the most serious objections to the employment of a shuttle removed.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new,
In a shuttle-race, a detachable lip or shoulder, extending over and partially inclosing the needle-way, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this liith day ot June, 1872.
