Description
1. Gl. wlfLsoN,
WIRE TIGHTENER.
Aprucmon mEq/wma. 19u. i l 11,307,650. Patented June 24, 1919.
V.JAinns e. WILSON, or ii'o'iisfioiii, TEXAS.
Application filed August 18, 1917. Serial No. 187,006.
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES Gr. WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of I-Iarris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a wire tightener.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described which is adapted to be used for the purpose .of tightening the strands of wire of a wire fence so as to take up the sag between the posts. vThe strands of wire ences after a time become loose and sag and it becomes necessary to tighten the strands and this device has been designed for the purpose of taking up said sag.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision ofa wire tightener. which will be cheaply and easily constructed and which maybe easily applied for the purpose for which it is intended.
yWith the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device.
Fig 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a front view.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view of the frame, and v Fig. 5 is an enlarged rear view of said frame.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like ynumerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to a fence post which supports the wires 2, said wires being.
secured to the post by means of the staples 3 in the ordinaryand well known manner. The tightener includes the frame 4, the handle 5, and the wire engaginglinks 6, 6. The frame is composed of a comparatively wide U-shaped member 7 having the legs 8, 8, spaced apart, said legs being connected by means of the arcuate brid e 9 which is integral therewith and spaced rom the back TES or Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J une 241:, 1919.-
of the frame. The back part of theframe has an oblong slot 10 through which thev handle 5 is inserted andthe innerfend ofsaid handle is provided with 'a transverse pin 11 which is inserted through said end,
said pin being provided to prevent the del tachinent of the handle ffrom the .,frame. The links 6, 6 lare pivoted to the handlefand said links are spaced apart so as to einbrace the fence post when in use, they under edges of said links being provided with ratchet teeth as 12 to engagewith` the wire on each side of the post.
rIn tightening placed against the post opposite the wire to be tightened, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 and the free end of the handle elevated, teeth 12 engaging over the wire on each side of the post, and the sharp spikesV 13, 13, projecting from the' corresponding klegs 8 engaging with the post to prevent the slipv page of the' frame. The free end of the handle is then forced downwardly into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the
inner end of the handle bearing against the bridge 9. This will exerty a backward pull through the links 6 and will draw the wire on each side of the postaround against the sides of the post as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. A tie wire 14 is then secured to the wire 2 up close to one side of the post and is drawn around said post and its other end secured to the wire to be tightened at the other side of said post, thus securing the wire to be tightened in position and taking up the slack in it between the posts on each side. As'the work progresses, the tightener is moved from post to post and while being moved, the links 6 rest upon the lateral arms 15, 15 projecting out from each side of tlieframe.
What I claim is:
A wire tightener, including a U-shaped frame' member, having an oblong slot there the wire, the: frame is through, anl arcuate bridge connecting legs i forming a bearing for the inner end of the engaging teeth, a laterally projecting ailn handle, ka pair of links pivoted at one end carried by each side of the frame, and proto the handle in the rear` of said*y frame y vided to form supports for said links.A l
