JOHN" J'. VAN VALKENIBURG, OF ATLIN, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA:
SI-IOVEL ATTACHMENT.
T 0 alljwhom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, JOHN J. VAN VALKEN- BURG, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident at Atlin, British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in shovels and more particularly to an attachment for a round nosed shovel or spade, so as to provide a shovel for dirt and the like, as well as one which can be used in connection with snow and for like purposes, the same having a straight edge portion or nose.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shovel attachment of the class specified, which will obviate the necessity of having a double supply of shovels, it being only necessary to attach or detach the blade, for permitting the use of the shovel in the different work required thereof.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of my improved shovel,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof, and I Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the attachment or straight edge shovel blade.
As shown in the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the round nose, or round pointed blade of a shovel having the usual attaching ferrule or plate portions 11, to which the handle 12 is connected. This shovel is preferably of the usual type employed in shoveling dirt and the like, or as used by miners, or in other construction or contracting work, the handle being prefe'rably long.
In order to permit the use of the device in shoveling snow in the winter time, instead of gravel or the like, I provide a blade 13, having a straight nose or edge 14 and having a recess 15 in its opposite end, inter Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 17, 1919 Application filed December 16, 1918.
Serial No. 267,082.
mediately of the sides thereof, for accommodating the ferrule 11 in the handle 12 when the blade 13 is applied to the blade 10, so as to be held firmly upon the same, the blade 10 reinforcing the blade 13 during this operation.
Both of said blades are preferably constructed of resilient steel and the blade 13 is stamped out at opposite sides to provide depending offset projections or lugs 16 arranged to engage opposite edge portions 17 of the blade 10, so as to securely hold the blades together, the blade 10 being limited in rearward displacement through the medium of a pair of lugs 18 formed upon the blade 13 and preferably stamped therefrom and extending downwardly so as to engage the rear end 19 of the blade 10, as is clearly shown in the drawings. The forward pair of lugs 16 is preferably closer than the rear pair of lugs and thereby the blade 10 is held from forward displacement with respect to the blade 13, or in other words, the blade 13 is held in rearward displacement with respect to the blade 10 in the act of using the same, in conjunction with the inner or bight wall of the recess 15 being engaged with the ferrule and thereby being .prevented from displacement with respect to the blade 10 and the handle.
By the above device it will be unnecessary to carry two sets of shovels, as the device can be readily changed at a moments notice and adapted for the work in hand. This will also save considerable space in the tool wagons or boxes wherein such devices are usually carried. This device will also be of great assistance in railroad construction or contracting work, the lug 16 forming clamps to secure the blades together.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: f
1. The combination with a shovel having a handle and a blade,- an attachment, com
prising a blade of diflerent configuration having spaced lugs resiliently engaged with the edge portion of the first named blade.
2. The combination With the round nosed blade of a shovel having a handle and at taohing ferrule, a straight edge shovel blade, both of said blades being of resilient steel, said second named blade having a recess at one end receiving said ferrule and series of stamped out lugs bent from and spaced from the bottom thereof, and spaced lugs depending from the rear portion thereof to engage the side edges and rear edge of the round nosed shovel blade to detaehably secure the same together.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
JOHN J. VAN VALKENBURG.
