To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. I/VHITTEN, a`
citizen of the United States, residing at Conway, in the county of Faulkner and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in valves for controlling the feed of water to a boiler and the draining of said boiler, and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for operating such a valve.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the water may be fed to the boiler witho-ut operating the valve so that it is only necessary to open the valve when the boiler is to be drained.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is simple and durable in construction, reliable and efficient in operation and one which can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a yview Ashowing the application of the invention to a boiler.

As shown in these views the water feed pipe 1 is connected to the boiler 2 by a valve casing 3. The lower end of this casing is connected with a sediment pipe t.l The valve in the casing 3 is operated by means of a handle 5 which is provided with a long stem G extending through the pipe 1 so that said handle is accessible from the outer side of the furnace wall. This casing receives the upper end of the shaft 12 which is provided with a few large threads 13 at its extreme upper end engaging with the threads in the casing and having a beveled wheel 111 at its lower end. This lower end -of the shaft rests on a bracket 15 carried by the valve casing and provided with the upwardly extending part 1G which is provided with a` semi-circular notch 17 and the grooves 18. Said grooves engage the bar 19 having the semi-circular notch 2O which together with the notch 17 forms a bearing for the inner end of the stem 6. Said stem at its inner end carries the bev eled gear 21 which engc ges with the gear 14 to rotate the shaft 12. In this way the threads 13 on the shaft 12 engaging with the screw threaded interior of the casing 11 will cause said casing to move vertically and thus open or close the valve. The bar 19 is connected 'with a ring or collar 22 by the strips 23, and said ring engages a shoulder formed around the opening 3 formed in the casing 3, for receiving the end of the pipe 1 and said ring is held in place by said pipe 1. I may form the stem 6 in sections and connect the sections together by means of forming screw threaded offset portions 6 thereon which are adapted to engage with each other and to be held in place by the screw threaded ring 6".
To render it unnecessary to operate the valve each time water is to be fed into the boiler I may provide check-valves 24 in the valve 7 which open inwardly to permit the feed water to flow into the boiler but which will be automatically closed by the pressure of the water in the boiler.
I perforate the boxing 10 and casing 11 as shown in Fig. 2 to permit the escape of water` from said parts. By reason of the tapered formation of the interior of the casing 11 when said casing is raised by the rotation of the rod 12 the said casing will become locked on the head 13 so that by rotating the rod back and forth the valve will be moved therewith and this will facilitate the discharge of the sediment from the boiler. Vhen it is desired to close the valve the rod 1Q is rotated to lower said valve and this action will bring one of the guides S into Contact with a stop 8 so as to prevent rotation of the valve and thus permit the rod 12 to lower said valve. The movement above described is limited by said stop. IVhen the valve is provided with cheeks it is not necessary to use or have a feed pipe cheek valve as is used at the present time and in case the boiler is to be cooled or not used for a while the cock and sediment valve may be opened, the pipes drained, thus retaining the Water inside the boiler without danger of the pipe freezing and bursting in cold weather.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make such changes in the construction and in the combination and ar angement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended Claims.

A device of the class described comprising a valve easing, a valve in said casing, a stationary housing depending fromv said valve, a. removable plug in the valve above the housing, a. removable housing in said stationary housing provided with interior screw threads, a shaft having its upper end screw threaded and engaging with said screw threads in the housing, and means for ro tating said shaft.
2. A device of the class described cornprising a valve casing, a valve in'said casing, a removable plug in said valve, a stationary housing depending from said valve below the plug, a removable housing formed in seetions located in said first mentioned housing and provided with internal screw threads, a shaft having its upper end screw threaded and engaging with the said screw threads in the housing, and means for rotatinO' said shaft.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a valve casing, a valve in said casing, a stationary housing depending from said valve, a removable housing formed in sections and provided with a tapered-screw threaded bore, said removable housingbeing located in the stationary housing, a shaft having its upper end screw threaded and engaging with the screw threaded bore, means for rotating said shaft, and wings depending from said valve cooperating with stops on said casing.
