Description

J. C. ROBERTS.
VALVE.
| N FILED MAR 1 Patented Oct. 21, 1919. I
JOHN COLMER ROBERTS, OF NEW IBERIA, LOUISIANA.
VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed March 12, 1919. Serial No. 282,153.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN C. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Iberia, in the parish of Iberia and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in valves, and has for its object to produce-a valve adapted for use in connection with gage cocks, globe valves, angle valves and blowbacks, wherein leaks in the valve may be remedied without the necessity of killing the boiler, the said valve never requiring. regrinding or repairing.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the improved valve;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section;
Figs. 3, at and 5 are sections on the lines 33, 44, and 5-5, respectively, of Fig.2.
In the present embodiment of the invention the improved Valve comprises a casing 1 of suitable size, having one end reduced and externally threaded as indicated at 2, to engage within the opening of the boiler 3 or other apparatus to which the valve is connected. The valve casing has an eccentrio longitudinally extending bore 4:, and the outer end of the valve casing is cored out concentrically as indicated at 5, a part of the cored out portion adjacent to the bore 1 being internally threaded as indicated at 6. At the cored out part, the valve is provided with a lateral discharge nipple 7 and a cap 8 closes the open end of the cored out part of the casing.
The valve 9 is integral with a rod or stem 10, which passes out through an opening in the cap, and has a handle 11. This valve or plug 9 has an eccentric longitudinally extending port or passage 12 which, at its inner end, is adapted to register with the bore 4 and which "at its outer end opens into an annular groove or passage 13 in the plug.
When the valve is turned down into the portion 6 of the cored out part of the easing, the annular groove 13 is below the cored part 5, and is closed, so that there is no communication between the bore 4 and the unthreaded portion of the cored part. A packing 14 of suitable material encircles the stem in front of the plug or valve 9, and a washer 15 is arranged on the stem in front of the packing. A sleeve 16 is threaded onto the stem in front of the Washer,
and this sleeve is held in adjusted position by a lock nut 17 also threaded on to the stem. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that the outer end of the sleeve 16 is madev polygonal for engagement by a wrench to turn the same to tighten the packing, and when turned to proper position the lock nut may be turned to lock the sleeve.
In use, with the parts in the position of Fig. 2, the bore 4 is entirely closed, and there can be no outlet for the gases which the valve is to control. When it is desired to openthe valve,'the handle 11 is turned, turning the plug out of the part 6 of the counterbore. As soon as the groove 13 passes beyond the annular shoulder formed to turn the sleeve 16 to tighten and expand the packing, and the leak is immediately stopped. There is no valve seat in the ordinary use of the term, to become worn and require regrinding. All repairs may be made upon the valve without requiring the boilers to be killed. I claim: 7
1. A valve casing having its bore at one end reduced to form a longitudinally extending port, a valve comprising a plug having threaded engagement with the casing at the junction of said port with the remaining portion of the bore, said plug having an annular groove near its outer end, and a port extending longitudinally thereof and communicating with the groove and adapted to register with the reduced port at the inner end of the plug, said casing having a lateral discharge with which the groove is adapted to register when the plug is turned so as to move the annular groove outwardly, a stem for the plug, a packing encircling the stem in front of the plug, and means.
threaded on to the stem for engaging the packing to expand the same. I
A valve casing having an end port and a lateral port, and a valve plug movable between the ports and having threaded engagement with the casing, a stem for the plug extending out of the casing, a packing on the stem, and means for compressing the packing between the plug and said compressing means to expand the same, the
packing closing the lateral port when the plug is between the same and the end port.
3. A valve comprising a casing having inlet and discharge ports spaced apart from each other, a valve plug movable between the ports and having an annular groove adapted to register with the discharge port when the plug is in one position, and a longitudinally extending bore communicating with the groove and adapted to communicate with the inlet port, said plug having a stem, a packing on the stem, means for compressing the packing against the plug to expand the same, said packing closing the discharge port when the plug is in another position, the plug having threaded engagement with the casing.
4. A valve comprising a casing having inlet and discharge ports spaced apart from each other, a valve plug movable between the ports and having an annular groove adapted to register with the discharge port when the plug is in one position, and a longitudinally extending bore communicating with the groove and adapted to communicate with the inlet port, said valve plug having a stem, a packing on the stem, means for compressing the packing against the plug to expand the same, said packing closing the discharge port when the plug is in another position.
5. A valve casing having inlet and discharge port-s spaced apart from each other, a valve plug normally between the ports, said plug having a passage for connecting the ports when the plug is in a predetermined position, a stem for the plug, a pack ing on the stem, means for compressing the packing against the plug to expand the packing, said packing normally closing the discharge port, and the plug having threaded engagement with the casing.
