To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN V. CUNNIFF, a citizen of the United States, and a'resident of Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Masachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Top-Roll-Saddle Mechanism, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the draw- This invention relates to top roll saddle mechanism of various types.
In order that the principle of the invention may be readily understood, I have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in th accompanying drawings, wherein Y Figure l is a vertical sectional'view of a top roll saddle mechanism embodying my invention;

tion, I have herein represented a front saddle member 6 supported upon the front drawing roll 1 and a rear saddle member 7 supported upon the intermediate and back drawing rolls 2, 3.
In top roll saddle mechanisms as heretofore constructed, a weight strap or weightsupporting member has been employed, and means have been provided to adjust the same with respect to the saddle members. I have disclosed improved means for adjusting the weight strap or weight-support ing member herein indicated at 8, and have provided means whereby the effective weight may be applied over the axes'of any one of a plurality of the said drawing rolls, that is, above the point or zone of engagement of an upper drawing roll and corresponding lower drawing roll or at intermediate points therebetween, without bringing said weightsupporting member into contact or objectionably near the drawing rolls.
- In the drawing and spinning of yarns, it is important that the proper pressure be applied to the various rolls in order to draw and spin the proper counts and in order to v provide a uniform or substantially uniform yarn. In accomplishing these and other objects, I have in the disclosed embodiment of the invention provided the upper end of the weight-supporting member with a deflected portion 9, preferably having a transverse rib or tooth 10 at. its under side adapted to take into any desired one of a series of transversenotches 11 in the saddle member, or one of said saddle members if aplura lity be employed. I have herein rep resented the front saddle member 6 as suitably notched for this purpose.
In Fig, 1, I have represented the toothed end of the weight-supporting member as engagingthe saddle member at a point be tween the axial lines of the front and inter mediate drawing rolls. It will be evident from said figure thatthere is a wide range of adj ustmen't of said weight-supporting member,and that as shown'in Fig. 4c the weight thereof may be applied directly above the axial line oftheintermediate drawing member without bringing the weight-supporting member objectionably near the intermediate drawing rolls. Byturning the weight-supporting member through'l'SO as illustrated in Fig. 5, the weightof said supporting member=8 may be applied directly above the axial line of the front drawing rolls or at an intermediate point 'between the front and intermediate rolls, as shown in Fig. 5.
It is evident that in this manner and by a very simple construction, I secure an extended range of adjustment of the weight-supporting member. In Fig. 6, I have shown a slightly modified form of my invention. Therein the weight-supporting member 8 is provided at its upper end with a laterally extending hub 12 tapped into which is, a threaded bolt 13 having in one end a transverse slot ll by which it may be adjusted. The head 15 of the bolt is preferably provided with a relatively sharp circumferential edge 16 to engage any one of a series of notches 11 of the front saddle member 6. By this means, I secure a compound ordouble adjustment, namely, that of the weight,
supporting member with respect tothe bolt 13 and that of the said bolt with respect to the saddle member. I have herein represented the weight'supporting member 8 as having an opening 17 at or near its upper end through which the saddle member 6 is adapted to pass. The lower end of said weightsupporting member is provided with a vertical slot 18 for the reception of the weight lever 19. Said weight lever has applied thereto the usual weight 20 and is fulcrumed within the loop or bracket 21. I have herein in dotted lines in Fig. 8 represented the weight-supporting member 8 as having a deflected lower end 22, by means of which, if desired, the point of engagement of said weight-supporting member and the weight lever- 19 may be in line with the point of application of theweight of the weightsupporting member 8 to the saddle member 6.
Heretofore so far as I am aware, the loop or bracket for the weight lever 19 has been vertically adjusted. I have discovered that it is of marked importance that the loop or bracket be adjustable in the same direction as the weight-supporting member 8;
that is to say, transversely of the spinning.

While this result may be effectedv in any suitable manner, I have in Figs. 1, 2 and 3represented the said loo-p or bracket as threaded in or otherwise secured to the hub 22 of a bracket 23, the latter being provided with an elongated slot 24 for the reception of a screw 25. The spinning frame or roller beam 5 is provided with a transverse slot 26 of suitable extent forthe reception ofthe hub 22 and permitting the transverse adjustment of said hub and of the bracket 23 by means of the slot 24 and screw 25. In this or in any other suitable manner, the loop or bracket 21 may be adjusted coincidently with the adjustment of the weight-supporting member 8.
I have demonstrated from the practical which may be either light or heavy and of any desired number.
From the, foregoing descrlption, it will "be evident" that I have provided means whereby the proper pressure may be applied to the desired drawing rolls or proportioned between the drawing rolls, thereby to effect the drawing and spinning of any desired count of yarn and the formation of a uniform yarn.
Having thus [described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.
Claims: V
1. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a front saddle, a back saddle, and a weight supporting member having a deflected upper end provided with a tooth lik formation to engage a similar formation upon one'of said saddles.
2. A top roll saddle mechanism including a saddle member and a weight-supporting member having a deflected upper end to engage said saddle member and shiftable therealong, said saddle member and deflected upper end having interengaging toothed formations.
8. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member and a weight-support ing memberhaving a deflected upper end to engage said saddle member and shiftable therealong, said deflected upper end being provided with a tooth to engage a similar formation upon the saddle member.
4. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member and a weigl1t-supporting member having a deflected upper end which may be positioned in either of two opposite directions, thereby to apply a weight thereofdirectly above themes of either of two upper drawing rolls.
5. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member,- and a weight-supporting member having an integral formation which maybe positionedso as to apply the weight thereof directly above'the aXes'of either of a plurality of upper drawing rolls. 7
'6. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member, three pairs of drawing rolls, and aweighteupporting member having a deflected upper end adapted to be posi-' tioned so as to apply the weight thereof directly above the middle drawing-roll.
7. Atop roll saddle mechanism comprising asaddle member, and a weight-supporting member having an integral deflected upper end for applying the weight thereof at a point removed from the plane of the body of said member,said weight supporting member having on said deflected upper end a tooth to engage and adjustable along a toothed formation extending along the saddle roll.
8. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member, a Weight-supporting member 8, means whereby the upper end of said member 8 may engage the saddle member at any one of a plurality of points therealong, a fulcruming member 19 for the weight-supporting member, the lower beam 5, an upstandin bracket 21 operatively connected to the tulcruming member 19, and means for adjusting the bracket 21 transversely of the roller beam.
9. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member, a weight-supporting member 8, a fulcruming member 19, the roller beam 5, an upstanding bracket 21 operatively connected to said fnlcruming member 19, a bracket 23 supporting said bracket 21,
and slot and screw provisions for adjusting said bracket 23.
10. A top roll saddle mechanism comprising a saddle member, a weight supporting member 8 having a deflected upper end adapted to be turned in either of two opposite directions to engage the saddle member, a fulcruming member 19 for the weight supporting member, the roller beam 5, an upstanding bracket 21 operatively connected to the fulcruming member 19, and means for adjusting the bracket 21 transversely of the roller beam.
