To all whom t may concern:
I Be it known that I, PETER SCHNURR, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rug-Beaters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention is designed for the purpose of providing a unique, eihcient and durable machine for the purpose of beating rugs, carpets and similar articles. The invention consists essentially of a main platform on top of which there is journaled in suitable bearings a main shaft to which motion is intended to be imparted by a suitable prime mover. This shaft connects with and oscillates a pair of paddles, the oscillations of the two being in opposition. The platform is further provided with a vertically adjustable frame on which the rug or carpet to be beaten is hung, this frame holding the carpet or rug in such a position that it may be played upon by the paddles.
The drawings illustrate and the specification describes what at present is thought to be the preferred embodiment of the invention. The actual reduction to practice, may however, suggest certain desirable changes or alterations, and the right is claimed to make any which are comprehended in spirit by the annexed claims.

n the drawings there is shown, a platform 1 which may be either the flooring of a room or a separate platform to be mounted upon a table or a suitable stand. Adjacent to one end, the platform carries the two hangers 2 in suitable bearings at the Atop of which the main shaft 3 is journaled. This main shaft 3 carries a driving pulley 4 over which the driving belt 5 is trained, the latter passing through an opening 6 formed in the platform and being tramedover the pulley 7 carried by the pr1me mover for Specification of Letters Patent.

Disposed longitudinally on the platform 1, there are two guides spaced uniformly throughout their length, each guide comprising preferably an angle iron 9, one flange of which is bolted or otherwise suitably held to the platform. The two angle irons comprising each guide are so arranged that a space is provided between their upstanding flanges, and in these spaces thus provided, the slide bars 10 are slidingly mounted.
Near one end of the platform 1, there are mounted two pairs of upstanding supports 11, between the individuals of each pair of which a shaft 12 is supported, this shaft being mounted in suitable bearings and designed for oscillating movement, being machined Vwith hub portions 13 which stand directly above the slide bars 10. The rock shafts 12 operate as. the means for main taining the beating paddles 14 in an upright position, and to this end, the hub portions 13 have formed therein the transverse slots 15 in which the paddles 14 loosely engage. At their lower ends, the paddles 14 are bifurcated and straddle the slide bars 10, pins 16 pivotally connecting the paddles at their lower ends with the slide bars.
The paddles 14 are caused to oscillate and thereby to perform their beating function by means of mechanism connecting them with the shaft 3. This mechanism comprises a bracket 17 suitably mounted on the platform 1 to one side of one of the guides, and this bracket is arranged to support in a vertical position a shaft 18 mounted for rotary movement in suitable bearings .formed in the bracket. At the upper end,
the shaft 18 is equipped with the beveled spur gear 19 and this gear meshes with the beveled pinion 20 carried on one end of the shaft 3. At the lower end the shaft 18 carries a radially disposed arm 21 performing the function of a crank.
One of the slide bars 10 near that end where it connects with its attendant paddle carries on its side the laterally projecting arm 22 which is maintained normally in a right angle position on the bar by the brace members 23. This arm 22 and its brace members are attached to the bar 10 where it requires the cutting away of the upstanding flange of the angle iron 9 to provide the clearance space 24, so that the bar 10 may be readily reciprocated. A link 25 connects the outer end ofthe arm 22 with the outer end of the crank 21 and, since the latter is caused to rotate by the rotation of the shaft 18, a reciprocating movement is imparted to the bar 10 in consequence.
A steadying slide bearing 26 is provided for the arm 21 adjacent the point where the braces 23 connect with the latter.
Since it is intended that the two paddles 14 shall oscillate in opposite directions, an oscillating bar 27 is pivotally supported at its longitudinal center on'a pin or stud 28 mounted in the platform l at an intermediater position between the two guides comprising the angle irons 9. This bar 27 extends transversely to either side of the two guide members, the upstanding flanges of their associated angle irons being cut away to provide clearance spaces 29 to permit the bar 27 to oscillate freely. The bar 27 is engaged by both the bars 10 and to permitsuch engagement, the latter are provided with the Slots 30 through which the ends of the bar 27 loosely pass. These ends of the bar 27 have the slots 31 formed in them and the legs thus provided by the formation of these slots straddle the pins 32, one of which is inserted through each bar 10 so that it crosses the slot 30 formed in the latter. It'will thus be observed that the 'construction just described provides for reciprocating movement of the" two bars 10, but since only one connects directly with the arm 21 and inturn transmits its motion through theoscillating bar 27 to the other bar, the two bars are reciprocated in opposite directions and the oscillating movements of their attendant paddles are thus oppositely disposed.
To provide means for supporting rugs, carpets and the like which are operated upon by the paddles 14, there is provided an open substantially right triangular shaped frame 33, the lower bar of which lies parallel to the platforml. This frame 331is mounted for' vertical `adjustment and to that end there are provided the upstanding supports'34 and 35, the one on one side of the platform 1, the other `on the other side of said platform. The support 34 and also the support 35 are provided with the longitudinal slots 36, the slot in the former receiving one end of the frame 33, and the slot in the latter receivingl for sliding engagement therein the guides 87-with whichjthe frame 33 is formed. The frame 33 is designed for vertical movementinlthe upstanding supports 34 and 35 andto assist in making this movement free, therev are providedthe rollers 38 rotatably mounted' on either side of the frame, at the topandbottom of the latter and rolling :on the inner faces of the upstanding supports. The uppermost of the guides 37 is internally threaded to permit its effecting threading engagement with the screw 39. The others of these guides may or may not be threaded, as desired. The screw 39 at its lower end carries a beveled gear 40 and this beveled gear meshes with a beveled gear 41 capable of beingturned bya crank 42, a thrust bearing for the screw and a suitable support for the gear 4l and its crank 42 being provided in the form of a bracket' 43 mounted on the support 35.
It is obvious that the turning of the crank 42 will operate to raise or lower the frame 33 and thus there is provided a means for the vertical adjustmentof theframe. The frame is designed to carry the rug or carpet which is to be subjected to the beating operation and such a rug or carpet is hung over the lower bar of the frame where it will hang in a position Lobe operated upon by the paddles 14when the latter are oscillated. In Fig. 3 there is shown a rug 44 in position to be subjected to a beating operation.
In the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the' construction and operation of the invention have been clearly enoughset forth to render further description unnecessary.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the character set forth comprising a rug supporting frame, a pair of guides, slide bars mounted in the guides, oscillating paddles, a mainshaft, connections between the main shaftand one slide bar, whereby the latter is reciprocated, connections between the saidslide bar and the other slide bar whereby that is reciprocated but oppositely as respects the first, and connections between the slide bars and the paddles.

A device of the character set forth comprising a rug supporting frame, a pair of guides, slide b ars mountedin the guides, rock shafts provided with longitudinal slots, supporting bearings Vfor the shafts, paddles passing loosely through the said slots, a main shaft, connections between the main shaft and one slide bar whereby the latter isreciprocated, connections between the said slide bar and the other slide bar wherebythat is reciprocated-but oppositely as respects the first, and connections between the slide bars and the paddles.

A device of the kind set forth comprising a rug supporting frame, a pair of guides, slide bars mountedl in the guides, oscillatingy paddles, a main shaft, connec-l tions between themainshaft and one slide bar whereby the latter is reciprocated, an oscillating bar pivotally mounted at its 'longitudinal center and formed-.with f end slots, each of the slide bars havinga pin playing in one of the said slots, and connlections between the slide bars and the padd es.

A device of the character set forth comprising a platform, a rug supporting 5 frame mounted on the platform, a pair o guides also mounted on the platform, slide bars mounted in the guides, rook shafts pro vided with longitudinal slots, supporting bearings for the rock shafts, paddles passing 10 loosely through the said slots, a main shaft, connections between the main shaft and one slide bar whereby the latter is reoiproeated, an oscillating bar pivotally mounted at its longitudinal center and carried upon the platform, the Said bar being formed with a longitudinal slot at each end, the slide bars having pins playing in said slots, and conxleotions between the slide bars and the pad- In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
