SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,687, dated March 21, 1899.

Be it known that I, FREAN A. MABEE, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to churns; and it consists of the novel construction, combination,
' and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown,
described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a churn of my improved construction.1 Fig. 2 is an fenlarged top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of myimproved churn I make use of a standard l, which is provided "a table or like piece of furniture.

Removably located in the bearings 6 is a sleeve 7, in the top of which is formed a continuous groove, and in which groove is located a plurality of balls 8. Rotatably arranged in the sleeve 7 is the vertical shaft 9, the upper end of which extends into a recess 10, formed in the top bearing 6, and within said recess, above the upper end of said shaft 9, is located a ball 11. A collar 12, having a groove formed in its under side, is removably located upon the shaft 9, said collar being normallyl positioned so as to bear directly upon the balls 8. Removably located upon the lower end of the shaft'9 is the rotating dasher of my improved churn, the same comprising a plurality of spherical bodies 13, the same being joined together in any suitable manner and arranged one immediately above the other. Formed at the points where the arms 5 joinwith the laterally-extending members of the bifurcated upper end 4 of the standard 1 are the horizontally-alined bear ings 14, in which is rotatably arranged a shaft 15, and upon the outer end of said shaft is removably fixed a crank and handle 16. Located upon this shaft 15, within the bifurcated upper end 4 of the standard 1 and between the arms 5, is a worm-wheel 17, the same being in mesh with the worm 18, which is removably located upon the shaft 9 between the bearings 6. 19 indicates the receptable into which the milk and cream to be churned are placed and in which the rotating dasher operates. By manipulating the crank-handle 16 in the ordinary mannergthe rotary motion thereby obtained is transmitted from the worm-wheel 17 to the shaft 9, and owing to the relative sizes ofthe worm and the worm-wheel a very high speed is impartedto said shaft. The spherical bodies 13, rotating at a high rate of speed in the body of milk and cream, create a plurality of differentially-disposed currents in the body of milk and cream and very rapidly and efficiently separate the particles of butter-fat therefrom.
A churn of my improved construction is simple, strong, and durable, is very easily operated, and there are no belts, pulleys, or counter-shafts and gearing to get out of order.
I claim- In a churn, a standard 1, the upper end of which is provided with a lateral extension, a
pair of vertically-alined bearings 6 formed in said extension, the sleeve 7 removably located in the lower one of said bearings, in the top of which sleeve is formed a continuous groove, ashaftrotatably arranged in the vertical bearings, a collar removably located upon said shaft immediately above the sleeve, ball-bearings interposed between saidV collar and sleeve, a worm removably located upon the shaft, a worm-wheel rotatably arranged in the lateral extension of the frame and in mesh with the worm, and a plurality of spherical bodies fixed one above the other upon the shaft to rotate therewith, substantially as specified.
