' To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ROBERT A. MARSHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and v State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Thread Placer and Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a thread placer and cutter intended for use on an automatic replenishing loom. 1
In such looms it is customary to insert a fresh weft carrier before complete exhaustion of the active weft carrier. This method of procedure leaves a weft thread extending from the ejected weft carrier to the selvage. It is extremely important that this thread shall be promptly severed so.that it may be drawn downward and removed by the ejected and falling weft carrier.
It is the general object of my invention to provide new and improved devices for severing this weft thread. which devices in the preferred form include a thread placer mounted on the lay, a thread cutter, and means to advance'the thread placer in predetermined relation to the movement of the thread cutter. The operative mechanism for the thread cutter is preferably related to the transfer mechanism so that the placer and cutter will be operated only when weft carrier transfer occurs.
Important features of my invention relate to the actuation of the thread placer directly from the thread cutter; to the yielding support for the thread cutter; and to the provision of a recessed end on said yielding support, adapted to cooperate with said outter and placer in holding and severing the thread.
My invention further relates to arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my. invention is shown in the drawings, in wh1ch Figure 1 is a side elevation of my 1mproved thread placer and cutter, and
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings I have shown in section a breast beam 10 and a lay 11 having a hand rail 12 forming a part thereof. A reed 13 is secured between the lay and the hand rail in the usual way.
My mpro ed th ead p acer 4 is pivoted at 15 on a' bracket 16 rigidly secured to the hand rail 12. An'adjusting screw 17 extends through a lug 18 integral with the placer 14 and engages a shoulder 19 on the bracket 16. The depending portion of the placer is preferably formed of sheet steel and is normally positioned with its lower end between adjacent dents of the reed and sul'liciently withdrawn to clear the path of the shuttle. The shuttle placer is also provided with a forwardly extending cam arm 20.
A stand 21 is adjustably secured by a clamping nut 22 to a plate 23 mounted on the breast beam 10. A slide 24 is mounted in bearings in upward projections 25 and 26 of the stand 21, and a shoulder 27 on the slide 24 is yieldingly held against the projection 25 by a coil spring 28. The .projection 25 is slotted to receive the slide 24 which may be held therein by a cotter pin 29.
The thread cutter 30 constitutes one arm of a three-armedlever 31 pivoted at to the slide 24. A second arm 33 of the lever 31 extends upward and is provided with an adjustable cam roll 34 positioned to engage the cam arm 20 of the thread placer 14. The third arm 35 of the lever 31 extends forward and downward, and is positioned for engagement by an actuator 36. The arm 35 also engages a lug 37 on the slide 24 and is yieldingly held in contact therewith by a spring 38 connected at one end to the arm 35, and at the other end to a portion of the stand 21.
The actuator 36 is movable upwardly on every second pick of the loom, but when so moved the actuator under normal conditions does not engage the arm 35. When, however, a weft carrier transfer occurs, the actuator is moved forward under the arm 35 and upon its next upward movement rocks the lever 31, moving the parts to the dotted'line position shown in Fig. 1.
The mechanism for positioning and moving the actuator 36 is not shown herein and forms no part of my invention but may be similar to that shown in the prior patent to Morell No. 1,150,448, issued August 17, 1915.
As the lever 31 is moved, the roll 34 engages the cam arm 20, forcing the thread placer forward so that the weft thread is carried into a'recess 40 formed in the rear end of the slide 24. The thread cutter 30 is simultaneously moved downward, and the parts are so designed that the thread placer and thread cutter will cooperate to hold and sever the thread within the recess 40. As the lay moves rearward the parts return to normal position, the thread cutter being returned by the spring 88 and the thread placer by a spring 41 (Fig. 2).
In the preferred construction the thread cutter has a shearing action against the adjacent face of the slide 24'.- In case the slide or thread cutter engages a shuttle which has failed to boX, the spring 28 permits forward a thread cutter mounted on the breast beam,
