Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1919.
Application filed February 21, 1919. Serial No. 278,458.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn L. BARNS, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Clair, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to baskets and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a basket of simple structure having its parts so arranged as to efiectually strengthen and brace the basket structure.
A further object of the invention is to provide a basket which is cheap to manufacture or make and which may be conveniently used for holding and carrying a great variety of articles.
With these objects in view the basket comprises sets of strips crossing each other at the bottom of the basket in interwoven form, the end portions of said strips being extended up into the sides of the basket. Bracing strips are interwoven in the bottom of the basket and lie between the members of one set of strips and pass over and under the members of the other set of strips at the same places that each alternate strip of the first mentioned set of strips pass over and under the second set of strips. By this structural arrangement a basket having a very strong and effectually braced bottom is provided.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of the basket cut on the line 11 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the basket.
As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the basket includes two sets of strips designated as 1 and 2. These strips are interwoven with each other at the bottom of the basket and are continued or extended up along the sides of the same as shown. The upper ends of the strips are bound together by means of the upper outer and inner bands 3 in a usual manner and the bands are secured in position by binding member 4 as usual.
Tapered corner strips 5 may be inserted in the corner portions of the body of the Qantas of this patent may; he ebtainea for tucked under the edges of the outer strips 2 at the corner portions of the bottom of the basket. The basket may be constructed with, or without, the tapered corner strips 5 as desired.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A basket including two sets of interwoven strips, an outer top band, an inner top band, the upper ends of said interwoven strips being held between said bands, a wrapping member winding about said upper bands, and a handle arranged to span across said basket having its ends sharpened and inserted between said interwoven strips said sharpened ends endingin a shoulder held against the lower edge of said inner top band said handle held between said upper ends (the intermediate portion of said handle being thickened) as and in the manner shown.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
JESSE L. BARNS.
