ELLIOTT PENDLETON WEST, OF JEESEY CITY, NEW
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,674, dated August 20, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it-known that I, ELLIOTT PENDLETON "VEST, of Jersey City, Hudson county, and
State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful lmproveinentin Sewing-Machines; and I hereby d clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which the same letter represents the same thing in each figure.
Figure 1 represents a fragmentary portion of a sewing-machine with my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of portions of my improved mechanism for raising the presser-t'oot. Fig. 3 is a top view or plan of certain parts.
The object ot' my invention is tolift the presser-foot of a sewing-machine While the machine is in operation for a brief period, to facilitate the turning of the material.
A is the main shaft; B, the lifting-cam; 0, its slot; D, its pin; E, its spring; F, the cam slide; G, its slot; 1, its guide-slot; J, the guide-screw thereof; K, the slide-bar; H, its pin; L, the lifting-lever; M, its connectingpiece; N N, its adjusting-screws; 0, its stud; P, its pin; R, the presser-foot S, the presserfoot bar; '1, its spring.
The operation is as follows: Revolving main shattArotates cam B, and when pressure is applied upon slide-bar Kits pin H works in slot G and moves cam-slide F, so that cam 13 lifts connecting piece M, which causes the liftinglever L to turn upon stud O and raise the presser foot bar S by pin P therein. The presser-foot R will rise from and return, by action of spring T, upon the material at each revolution of the main shaft, remaining on while cam B is passing connecting piece M, and no longer. Releasing the pressure from slide-bar K, spring E returns cam B to its position out of contact with connecting piece M, and raises slide-bar K by cam-slide F,-slot G, and pin H.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The mechanism shown, consisting of slide bar K, the slotted camslide F, cam B, and lit'tingleverL, constructed and operating, substantially as described, to lift and restore the presser-t'oot of asewing'machine while in operation.
ELLIOTT PENDLETON WEST.
