UNITED -STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
' JOHN" w. Posr, on NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNORTO THE GHILDS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY. r
PRESSER-BAR LIFIING AND ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR SEWlNG-MACHINES,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,851, dated November 29, 1887. I
Application filed July 23, 1886.
Z) all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Post, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of i New York, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Presser- Bars for Sewing- Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in 1 the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the head of the overhanging arm of a sewing-machine embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section thereof.
This invention relates more particularly to certain improvements in the construction and arrangement of the presser-bar and lifting devices; and it consists in'certain details of construction and combination of devices, substan- 25 tially as hereinafter fully described, and as set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, H indicates the head formed on the outer end of the overhanging arm of sewing machines, in which are formed, as
usual, bearings for the needle-bar N and the presser-bar B, that carries, as usual, a presserfoot, B, said pres'ser-foot being yieldingly held upon the work. by a coiled spring, S, eucircling the resser-bar B, which latter is lifted 3 5 from the work by means of an eccentric-lever, L,'or other suitable means. One end of the coiled spring S, that acts on the presser-bar 'B, bears on the under side of the head H of the overhanging arm, while its other end bears '40 on a pointed screw, 0, that passes through the resser-bar B, the pointed end of which screw projects into a vertical guide-groove, h, formed in the side of said head H. This screw serves Serial No. 208,858. (No model.)
three purposes-first, to guide the presser-bar properly and prevent it from turning in its 5 bearings; secondly, as a means for lifting the Presser-bar, (the eccentric Z of lever L impinging on said screw,) and, thirdly, as a means for compensating the wear of the presser-bar in its bearings, or for taking up lost motion, which may be readily done by turning the screw more or less to the right, as may be found necessary.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s 1. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the head of the overhanging arm, the presserbar, the spring encircling it, and the pin passing through thebar, upon which pin the I spring rests, of the lifting-lever pivoted to the head and adapted to operate upon the under side of said pin to raise the bar against thetension of the encircling spring, substantially as described.
2. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the overhanging arm having the slot or groove therein, of the resser-bar and the spring encircling it, and the pin passing through the bar and projecting into the groove in the arm to guide the bar and serving as a projection against which the spring bears, substantially as described.
3. In a sewing-machine, the combination, with the head of the overhanging arm having the groove, ot'the presser-bar and the adj nstable 7 5 pointed screw passing through the bar andcooperating with the groove in the head, whereby the wearbetween the parts may be taken up and a new wearing-surface presented when desired, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. POST.

Correction It is hereby certified that in Letters Patent No. 373,851, granted Noyernber 29, 185 for an improvement in Presser-Bar Lifting and Adjusting Device for Sewing M chines, the neine of the assignee was erroneously written and printed Uhilds Sewn Machine Company, whereas it should have been Model Sewing Machine Oompan that the proper correction has been made in the files and records pertaining to t case in the Patent Office, and should be read in the Letters Patent to make the sat conform thereto.
Signed, countersigned, and seziled this 6th day of December, A. D. 1887.
