Be it known that I, Snfrnnnl ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at `Windber, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented Certain 'new and'useful Improvements in Trip, Devices, of which the following is a'speo'i'- fication.

One object of my4 invention is to provide a portable trip or stop device which can be used for attachment to the ties of a railroad so as to be operative to effect the movement of train stopping mechanism carried by a train or car to cause the latter to be automatically stopped.

Another object is to so make my improved trip that it can be readily carried and easily and firmly attached to a railroad tie.

These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention attached to a railroad tie or rail; the tie and rail being shown in dotted lines,

Fig. 5 is a Jfragmentary elevation showing my improved stop in its relation to the train stopping mechanism, such for example, as the train stopping mechanism which is claimed in my co-pending application for United States Patent, Serial No. 255,214, filed September 23rd, 1918, and allowed November 19th, 1918.

My present invention, as shown in Fig. 5, is illustrated in connection with a pendulum lever 17 which forms a part of my above mentioned application and which, when swung in either direction, effects the stopping of the train.

My present invention consists-of a stop 36 which is of a portable character and includes a plate 39, (see Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive). The plate 39 can be positioned on any of the ties of a railroad and includes a forked end 40 which can embrace the base 41 of one of the rails, as illustrated.

This plate 39 also includes a pointed tooth 42 adapted to pierce one side of the tie 43. An arm 44 has a projection 44a adapted to slidably fit within a recess 45 in the plate 39. Thus by turning the A stopping device of this nature can be l carried on the train and can be attached by the brakeman of a train so that instead of the usual flagging of an oncoming train this device will serve to positively stop an oncoming train automatically and to prevent an end collission.

It will be noted that, as shown in Fig. 5, the pendulum lever 17 will engage the stop 36 and a continued movement of the train will cause said pendulum lever to swing and as before stated, this swinging movement effects the stopping of the train.

While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A portable trip device of the character described including two relatively movable members having portions adapted to engage opposite faces of a tie, one of said members having a recess, the other of said members having a projection slidably fitting said recess; and means connecting said members and movable to cause movement of said projection into said recess and said portions into clamping engagement with said tie; substantially as described.

2. A portable trip device of the character described including two relatively movable members having portionsadapted to clamp against a tie and another portion for engagement with a rail whereby said latter portion forms a. brace `against said rail; substantially as described.

3. A portable trip device of the character described including two relatively movable members having portions adapted to engage opposite faces of a tie; and means for moving said members together to cause said members to pierce the tie and hold the trip in position thereon, certain of said members having forked portions adapted to embrace the base of a rail; substantially as described.

4. A portable trip device of the character described including a' plate adapted to rest vnpon a tie and having a forked portion for engagement with the base of a rail and a tooth for engagement With the side of the tie; an arm movably secured to said plate and having a tooth for engagement with the opposite side of said tie; and clamping l5 In testimony whereof I have signed my 20 name to this specieation in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
