AUTOMATIC TRAIN STOP.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. KlssnL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Train Stops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a mechanically operated mechanism for automatically stopping trains, and an object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple mechanism, by means of which a train may be stopped automatically, "for the purpose of preventing accidents and further to provide a device which will eliminate the use of derailers as serious accidents often result from the de-railment oi a train by the approved type 01 de-railers, used in connection with railway trains.
Another object of this invention is to provide a train stop mechanism as specified which comprises a weighted lever connected to the throttle of a locomotive engine, which lever is normally held in position to permit operation 01 the engine, and also to provide a simple mechanically operated structure for releasing said weighted lever to permit it to move upon its pivot for operating the throttle to arrest movement of the engine equipped with the device.
A further object of this invention is to provide a simple track carried mechanism which may be manually set for operating the train carried mechanism at the proper time to arrest travel of the train, it being understood that the track operated mechanism is placed on the track at the proper distance from a crossing or other dangerous place along the railroad so as to permit the stopping of the train before it reaches such dangerous place.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:

Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. v Referring more particularly'to the drawings, the lmproved automatic train stop comprises a lever 1 which is pivotally supported intermediate its ends as shown at 2 from a suitable supporting bracket 3. One end of the lever 1 is connected by means of the slot and pin connection 4 with the steam control structure 5 of any approved type of steam locomotive. A. weight 6 is mounted upon the end of the lever 1 remote from the slot and pin connection a and the weight is such as to move the outer end of the lever downwardly for operating the mechanism 5 to cut oil the supply of steam to the cylinders of the locomotive for the purpose of stopping the locomotive equipped with the device. i
The lever 1 has an arm 7 pivotally connected thereto which is in turn pivotally connected to a lever 8. The lever 8 is pivotally supported intermediate its ends by a suitable support 10 and it has its end remote from the link 7 provided with a recess 11 normally receiving a locking pin 12 for preventing pivotal movement of the lever 8 and consequently preventing pivotal movement of the lever'l. The locking pin 12 is urged into the recess 11 by a spring 13 which is coiled about the shank 1 1 or the pin, and engages against the enlargement 15 and the bearing 16 of the support 17. V A spreader wedge 19 .is formed upon the upper end of the vertically movable rod 20 which engages between the projection 15 and the pressure roller 21 which is carried by the lever S. The lower end of the rod 20 has a collar or curl 22 mounted thereon which aligns with a similar collar or cufi' 23 carried by the upper end of the operating rod 24. The operating rod 24: projects clownwardly beneath the engine equipped with the structure and has a roller 25 on its lower end which is adapted to be engaged by the operating member 27, of the track structure generically indicated by the numeral 28.
The track structure 28 comprises a suitable supporting plate 29 which is carried by certain of the rail supporting ties A intermediate the rails B, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of "the drawings. The operating member 27 is pivotally supported by means of a slot and pin connection as shown at 30 from the plate 29 and an eccentric 31 engages beneath the track structure 27, is operated for rockmg'the eccentric to move I nation with the control mechanism of a loco the free end of the operating member 27. The eccentric 31 is mounted upon a shaft 32 which extends transversely of the track structure and which is connected by miter or bevel gears 33 with a shaft 34 which extends longitudinally of the track structure. The shaft 34 may be of any length and if necessary a suitable coupling as shown at 35 may be embodied in this construction. A hand lever 37 is carried by the shaft 34 to permit. manual rocking. or rotation of the shaft to rotate the shaft 32 to rotate the eccentric 31 for the purpose of raising the operating member 27 into striking position relative to the roller 25, the said position being indicated in dottedlines in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
In case of-danger to the train approaching the hand lever 36 the operating member 2? into its upward operating position, and a train approaching the danger point, and carrying the improved mechanism illustrated in- Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings will be stopped through the engagement of the roller 25 with the member 27. When the roller 25 engages the member 27, it will move the rod 24 upwardly forcing the cuff or collar'23 into the cuff or collar 22 and move the rod 20 forcing the spreading wedge 19 between the roller 2i and projection 15 for moving the locking pin 12 out of the recess 11 for releasing the lever 8 which in turn releases the lever l permitting it to move along under gravity action upon the weight 6 and operating the mechanism 5 for arresting travel of the train.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in other manners and the parts associated in other rela tions and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth inthe claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. In an automatic train stop, the combimotive, of a pivotally mounted weighted lover, a second pivotally mounted lever connected thereto, means associated with said second lever for restraining said weighted lever from movement, .a vertically movable releasing rod for releasing said restraining comotive, of a pivotally mounted weighted lever connected thereto, a second pivoted.

4. In an automatic train stop, the combination with the control mechanism of a locomotive, of a pivotally mounted weighted lever, a second pivotally mounted lever connected thereto, means associated with said second pivotally mounted lever for restraining said weighted lever from movement, and means for releasing said restraining means.
5. In an automatic train stop, the combination with the control mechanism of a locomotive, of a pivotally mounted weighted lever, a second pivotally mounted leverconnected thereto, a locking pin co-acting with said second lever for restraining movement of saidweighted lever, a spreader wedge for shifting said pin to release said weighted lever, and track carried means for operating said wedge.
