To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM SoHAorIA'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, city of Greater New York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Squares, of which the following is a specification. V
My invention relates to squares, more particularly adapted for use by tool makers, and has for its primary object to provide'an article of this character wherein the blade of the device is adjustable to some extent with respect to its stock, and has associated therewith indicating mechanism, whereby variations in angles from the 45 angle may be detected instantly, and the amount of variation in degrees may be determined'with ac-' curacy.
My improved construction also embodies certain minor details, as will be pointed out hereinafter more definitely, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, theblade being shown partly broken away. i i

In the said drawing thereference numeral 1 denotes the blade of the square, which is attached by means of a pivot pin 2 to the stock, the latter being formed in two sections 3 fastened together by means of screws 4, this fastening means being supplemented by dowel pins 5, which position the two parts 3 with respect to each other before the screws 4 are inserted in position. The outer face of each of the sections 3 of the stock is re cessed at 6, and at its side edges is rabbeted to receive a sliding cover plate 7 correspondingly shaped at its edges, said cover plate terminating at its inner end on the arc of a.

The ends'of the pivot pin 2 are squared'at 9, and each has mounted thereon a pointer 10' which extends in the space between its cover plate 7 and itssection 3 of the stock to'the scale 8, so that movements of said pointer will be shown on the 'said'scale in a' manner readily understood. Itwill be understood that the blade 1 of the device is fixed to its pivot pin 2, and also fixed to each side of said blade is one end of a coiled spring 11', the other end of which is fixed to its section of, the stock, as shown in Fig. 4. These springs are arranged so that they will exert their tension between the blade 1 and the stock to cause said blade to assume the position with respect to the stock shown in Fig. 2, that is to say, at a slightly acute angle with-1e spect thereto, the inner edge of the blade abutting a shoulder 3 on the stock to limit said movement, as best seen'in Fig.3. With the parts in this position the pointers 10 will be moved to their extreme of movement to the acute angle side of the 90-position, as shown in Fig. 2. The blade 1 is capable of movement to a corresponding degree to the obtuse angle side of the right angle position, and is limited inits movement in that direcs tion by the inner lower end thereof coming in contact with the shoulder 3, in a manner similar to its contact under the acute angle movement. v p I f In order to mziintaifith blade in a posi' tion at a true right angle to the stock, I provide an aperture 12 in said blade, which is adapted to register accurately with corresponding apertures 13 in the sections 3, so
that upon the insertion of a pin 14 accurately fitting said apertures, the blade 1 will be maintained at a true right angle with respect to the stock, it being understood that the cover plates 7 are similarly apertured at 15 in register with the apertures 13 to receive said pin 14. In each of the sections 3 I also provide a screw-threaded aperture 16, receiving a headed screw 17 adapted to be brought into contact with the face of the blade 1, whereby the latter may be clamped in any adjusted position away from the rightangle position when desired, it be ing understood that the cover plates 7 are Then the device is desired to be used as a true square, the insertion of the pin 1i will fix the parts in such position, and when it is desired to clamp the blade 1 in any of its positions of adjustment out of true square position,,this may be accomplished by means of the set-screw 17.. A pointer 10 is provided on each side of the stock so that a scale reading may be had from either face of the device.
In the outer end of, the stock I provide an aperture 19 for the purpose of receiving the in 1 1 when the same is not used to retain the blade 1 in the right angle position. In one of the sections of the stock 3,. I provide two screw threaded apertures adapted to receive therein small screws 20 with points, which cooperate with cut-away portions 21 in the blade 1 to limit the movement of said blade and prevent it. from hitting the stock, as shown in detail in Fig. 7. In other words, they act as stops to limit the maximum movement of the blade 1 in. either direction. It will be understood, however, that neither of these features is essential to the effective operation of the device otherwise.
Having thus described my inventiemwhat I claim as new and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is
1. 2. A square, comprising a two-part stock, a blade pivoted therebetween and capable of adjustment to either side of a 90 angle with respect to said stock, a pointer fixed to said blade and cooperating with ascale on said stock to indicate the degree of variation from said 90 angle, and a removable plate adapted to cover all of said pointer except its free end which cooperates with said scale.
3. A square, comprising a stock, a blade pivoted thereto and capable of adjustment to either side of a 90 angle with respect to said stock, a pointer disposed in a recess in said stock and fixed to said blade and cooperating with a scale on said stock to indicate the degree of variation from said 90 angle, and a cover plate having sliding engagement with said stock to cover said recess and pointer, said plate when in its adjusted position terminating short of the scale .on said stock and short of. the free end: of said pointer indicating on said scale.
41. A square, comprising a stock, a blade pivoted thereto and capable of adjustment to either side of a. 90 angle with respect to said stock, and coiled springs upon opposite sidesof the pivot of said blade and engaging said blade and stock respectively to maintain said bladenormally at the inner extreme of its pivotal adjustment by tension in that direction.
