To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Hurorr- INS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dynamo- Casings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to the casing of a dynamo-electric machine of the inclosed type, and particularly to the means by which access is afforded to the commutator and brushes.

In a generator or motor of the inclosed type it is common to provide the casing with a head or end-member having a cylindrical portion, within which the commutator and the brushes are inclosed. It is also common to provide this cylindrical portion with openings through which access is afforded to the commutator and brushes, and to cover these openings normally with a metal band or strap which encircles, and is clamped upon the cylindrical portion. To retain the band securely upon the casing the cylindrical surface on which the band rests has heretofore been terminated, at its outer extremity, by a flange or shoulder which engages the edge of the band and prevents lateral movement thereof except when the band is loosened for the purpose of removal.

The object of the present invention is to simplify the construction of a casing of the type in 'question by the elimination of the flange or shoulder before referred to, so that the cylindrical surface on which the band rests may be formed more simply and cheaply than by the turning operation 'by which such shoulder is usually produced. To this end it is proposed, in accordance with the present invention, to provide, as a substitute for such shoulder, one or more retaining-devices upon the band, which devices are arranged to enter and cooperate with the opening or openings in the casing when the band is in place and tightened thereon. Since the band is made of sheetmetal these retaining-devices may readily be formed integrally from the material of the band, preferably by a stamping or embossing operation of simple character.

The invention is illustrated as embodied in a machine of which the casing comprises the usual head 4 provided with a cylindrical portion 5 which incloses the commutator and the brushes and also supports one of the bearings for the armature-shaft. The commutator 6 and the bearing 7 are shown in dotted lines, while other parts of the machine, not essential to the present invention, are omitted.

The cylindrical portion 5 is provided with two lateral openings 8, and these openings are normally covered by a metal band or garter 9 of which the general form is not novel, this band being divided, and being formed with lugs 10 cooperating with a bolt 11 by which the band is tightened to secure it in place.

The novel feature of the band, in so far as the present invention is concerned, resides in the formation, in the sheet-metal of the.

projections 12, which enter the openings 8 and act as retaining-devices to prevent lateral movement of the band. Owing to the provision of these projections it is unnecessary to provide any shoulder at the outer extremity of the cylindrical surface on which the band rests,and this surface therefore extends unbroken to the end of the casing.

The invention claimed is:

In a dynamo-electric machine, the combination of a casing-member provided with a cylindrical surface of uniform diameter extending to the end of the casing, and with a transverse opening, through said surface, affording access to the interior of the casing; and a band adjustable to fit and clamp upon said surface, to cover said opening, and provided with an integral inwardly pressed projection adapted to enter said gpening and retain the band on said surace.
