Description

J. B. BRADLEY.
SCREEN HINGE.
APPLICATION minima. u. 191s.
Patented June 17, 1919.
WHA/5885s,- 8. Q.
UNITED sTATEs PATENT OFFICE.
.iosEPH B. BRADLEY, or MIAMI, FLORIDA.
SCREEN-HINGE'.
Application tiled February 11, 1919. Serial No. 276,402.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. BRADLEY, a citizen of the United Statesresiding'at Miama, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screen-Hinges, of which the following is a specification. A i
This invention relates to hinges, and more particularly to sash or screen frame hinges which are mounted in rabbeted' places 1n their frames.
One of the principal objects of the 1nvention is to provide a hinge which is" readily attached to the sash or screen frame and which permits of the convement h anging of the sash or screen without mortising or without materially marring the window'` frame.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hinge for vertically swlnging window sashes or screens 'adapted to u fit within the rabbet portions of window frames which will absolutely prevent the breaking or splitting of the wood of which removed.
the sash or screen is constructed at thevpoint of attachment of the hin e. Further objects and a vantages will api pear as the following description is read 1n connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing a detail of a window frame with a screen hinged in the outer rabbet.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line'2*2 of Fig. l, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the ,hinge Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the position of the hinge on a screen frame. Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 represents the body of the hinge which is'eon'structed of anysuitable typeof material andis provided at its side marginal edges 'with arallel anges 2 and -at its upper end with an'attachin'g'lip 3 lying in a plane with the body and provided with a' hole 4.- to receive a pivot be driven into the window frame 6. The body of the hinge is provided with separate screw or other similar fastening device which is adapted to many conditions under which the hinge'may be employed.
In using the present type of hinge to connect the screen frame to the window frame one hinge member is mounted upon each upper end of the frame with'the flanges 2 straddling the same and littin on the inner and outer sides thereof, as s own in Fig. 2 with the lip 3 extending above the screen frame so as to conveniently receive the fastening device. rIhe hinge is then attached by driving in the fastening members 8 which pass through the apertures and enter'the wood of the frame as shown. The screen` frame is then fitted within the rabbet and the pivot screws or nails are driven into the wood of the window frame. The
screen thus normally hangs in a vertical position with its inner face abutting the sash bead 9 and its lower ed e contacting with the sill l0. In practice, suitable catches are employed to hold the lower end ofthe screen from moving outwardly accidentally and as employed the screen frames are provided with a bridging strip 11 which is attached to the upper end of the screen on the inner side and extends between the same and the outer and upper sash as shown to prevent the'ingress of flies or other insects. It is, of course, understood that this strip may be omitted and the screen hinged to the inner surfaces of the opposite sash beads 9. In such instance a suitable stop would be provided for the lower end of the screen to contact with to limit .its inward movement. When -the lower end of the screen 1s K speeineatiqn of Letters Patent. Patented June 17, 191.9.l
pushed outwardly the upper end will 'l leave the upper sash and again come in conl tact with it when the lower end of the screen 1s IpIulled inwardly.4
vices, attaching devices extending t erethrough and entering the Wood 'of the frame, lateral imperforate flanges extendingfrom the side edges of the body and arranged to straddle the vertical pieces of the frame to which the bod)Y is attached and lie parallel to each other und to tlie fastening devices to prevent splitting of the frame and a longitudinally extending lip formed integrally with the body and having a central aperture to receive a pivot member for the 10 hinge.
In testimony whereof I :1l-fix my signature.
JOSEPH B. BRADLEY.
