Description

UNITED l STA Y ALBERT J. LYONS, OF MILWAUKEE, TJVISCONSIN.`
snIPrINe-Tae.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT a citizen of the United States, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shipplng-Tags, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, which are a part of this speci cation.
The invention relates to a shipping tag to beattached to articles of merchandise for shipment and more particularly t0' a tag which may be readily used as a return receipt for the goods so that the shipper 1may know of the safeA receipt of the goods and the date when received, the tag serving as a record of the shipment.
The invention further consists inthe several features hereinafter set forth and shown in the accompanying drawings in which: 'f
Figure 1 is a front view of the tag in the. condition in whichit is attached J. LYoiv-s,
Fig. 2 is a front view of condition in which it is to the shipper;
l lFig'. 3 is a back. view condition in which it isj the shipper; and
Fig.` 4` is a section taken on the line 1 -4 of Fi 1.
the tag in the be returned to of the tagiii the to be returned to Re erring to the drawings, the numeral 5f designates generally the tag which'on one side is provided with the address 6 of the consignee and the address 7 of the consignor,
a space 8 being reserved for postage in case the article is sent by mail. On the back of the tag there are designations 9 of the various articles to 'be shipped and the consignor may llin the numbers of these articles accompanying the tag as shown at 1Q. 'in Fig. 3.
On the face of this tag the shipping number 11 is given and the word Shipped 12 with the date of shipment 13 to be filled in by the shipper opposite the word Shipped There is also on the back of the tag the word Received 14 with the line 14 upon which the consignee fills out the date of receipt of the goods and there is also the writing Received by 15 with the line 16 underneath for the signature of the There is also a place 17 for a return stamp' so that the tag may be mailed back to the shipper.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 25, 1918. Serial No.
and residentl this end of the tab :on the back of this ','ceiver return to shi to the goods .that the tab may be Patented June 10,1919. 264,054.
In using the tag as a return receipt, it is necessary to obliterate the address, -or a por tion of the address, of the consignee and to accomplish this purpose I have provided a eyelet 19. lA portion of the tab adjacent one end is notched as 2O in Fig. l so as to for 4 a short connecting portion 21 which may be readily torn off from attached to the tag by the eyelet. Adjacent this notched portion are wings 22 which aremormally folded in under this end of the tab and notches 23 are cut in the tab adjacent the wings 22. A' slot 24: is cut through the tag. gThe words Insert here 25 and Detach here 26 and Return to 27, with their arrows, are directions for .the consignee. There is also a statement tag When signed by repper. L In the use of this tag, the tab is secured in position as indicated in Fig. l and the directions lon the face of the tag show that the goods are consigned from, Richard Roe to lohn Doe & Company, at a certain address, and the back ofthe tag showsthe character and amount of the goods shipped, the shipping number and the date when shipped. As soon as the goods are received by John lDoe & Company or his receiver, he is in? the designation Detach here 26 to brea oi" the connecting portion 21 of the tab and to insert the end thus broken ofi' into the slot 24,`the wings 22 being then spread out as shown in Fig. 3 so as to secure the tab in the position shown in Figs. 2 and en so secured, the tab obliterates a portion of the address of the receiver and also brings `into view the words Return to with the directon arrow pointing to the shipper. The receiver also lplaces the date of receipt `of the goods on the line 1.4 and his name on line 16, puts a stamp on the space 17 and returns the tag to the shipper structed 'bg vwho then Yhas a permanent record of the shipment of the goods.
' While the tab 18 has been shown as a naru row strip which will cover a part of the address of the receiver, it will be understood made larger in width so as to completely cover the name and address of the receiver, if desired.
From the foregoing explanation, it will covering tab 18 which is folded'media'lly of Vits ends and is secured at its ends, to the tag .1,5 by means of an be noted that the invention will greatly facilitate negotiations between the shipper and receiver.
What l claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a shipping tag upon which the names and addresses of the shipper and receiver appear and the designations Shippedf "Receiv'ed7 and Received by, of a tab carried by the tag and normally exposing the said addresses, and means for moving and detachably securing a portion of the tab to the tag to cover the address of the receiver to permit the return of the tag by mail as a receipt to the shipper.
2. The combination with a shipping tag, having the addresses of the receiver and shipper thereon, of a tab secured at its ends to the tag, means permitting of severing one end of the tab from the tag, and means for securing this severed end to the tag over the address of the receiver.
3. The combination with a shipping tag, having the addresses of the receiver and shipper thereon,
secured to the tag and a reduced portion of a tab having its ends incense adjacent one end te permit severing of this end of the tab from the tag, said tag having a slot therein, and an interlocking connection between the severed end of the tag and the slot, the tag being so disposed as to cover the address of the receiver when the severed end is held in the slot.
4. The combination with a shipping tag, having the addresses of the receiver and shipper thereon, or' a tab having its ends secured to the tag and a reduced portion adjacent one end to permit severing of this end of the tab from the tag, said tag having an intermediate slot and an interlocking connection between the severed end of the tab and the slot, said interlocking connection being formed by wing portions on each side of the severed end of the tab, and said wing portions being adapted to be folded under the tab when the reduced portion of the tab is unsevered, the tab being so posed as to cover the address of the receiver when the severed end is held in the slot.
in testimony whereof, affix my signature.
ALBERT J. LYONS.
