l Be itknown that I, CHARLES OsTEma citi zen of the United States, residin at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have, invented anew and useful Improvement-in De'tachable Heels; ,and I do hereby declare the'follow ing, when taken-in connection with themcompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the same, and which said drawings constitute part ofthis application, and represent, in

This invention relates to an improvement in detachable heels, and particularly to means for securing the top lift in place, and
is adapted for use in connection with top plates formed from rubber, leather, metal or any other material, the object of the invention being a simple arrangement of parts whereby top lifts may be readily secured to heels of boots and shoes and removed there from as occasion may require; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I form the regular heel 11 with a recess 12 in its under face, and in this recess I secure a heel plate 13 preferably struck up from sheet metal and formed with a series of transverse straps 1 1, 15 and 16 of different lengths and tapered at their ends, the wider strap being near the forward end. These straps may be struck out from the heel plate so as to be integral therewith, or may be formed separately and attached 'to the plate. The plate is-also formed at its forward ed e with a clownwardly projecting flange 1 the centralportion 18 of whichis cut away in line with'the strap 16 for the purpose as will hereinafter appear. The flange is longer than the width of the strap, and'the ends 19and 20 are turned inward. Preferably and as herein shown the inner end of the plate will be formed with a slight depression 21 for the purpose as'h erein'after specified. In connec tion with a heel thus provided with a heel plate,' I employa top lift 22 which maybe formed from rubber, leather, wood or any other material. Secured to the upper face of the top lift 22 is a top lift plate 23 corresponding in dimensions to the heel plate 13 and is formed with transverse straps 24 and 25 respectively located so as to pass between the straps l4 and 15 and the straps 15 and 16. These straps are of different lengths and tapered at their ends so that the straps on the two parts form a continuous taper. The top lift with its plate attached is placed against the heel, and a key 26 inserted between the two plates so as to pass between the several straps thereon. This key is tapered corresponding to the taper of the straps so as to firmly connect them together. This key is formed at its inner end with a slight recess 27 to engage with the projection 21 on the heel plate before referred to. It is also formed near its outer end with a slight projection 28 which will engage with the edge of the flange 17 so that the key is locked in position. The key is also formed with a downwardly projecting lip 29 which closes the openings between the edge of the heel and the top lift and forms a finger-piece by which the key may be pried out as occasion may require. Instead of forming the top lift from rubber, leather or similar material it may be formed from a sheet of metal 30, as shown in Fig. 9 of the drawings, in which case the plate will be slightly larger than the opening 12 in the heel so as to rest upon the edge of the heel, and this plate will be formed with downwardly projecting prongs 31 more or less in number, which serve for use on icy walks. This metal plate may be readily removed when not required for use, and replaced by another top lift. This construction permits the use of a top lift of ordinary construction; that is, for instance, a rubber heel having a flat upper face as it is only necessary to attach the top lift plate to a to enable at) be connected minimise,"
and so that after the heel is once prepared and provided with a heel plate, various top parts are not only firmly held in position,
but when occasion requires the key is more readily removed than might be the case with a straight key if such a straight key should become rusty so' as to adhere to the straps. By forming-the straps as an-integral partof the plates they have a certain amount of spring action so as to increase the cushioned efi'ect of the heel. a
I claim i Means for attaching detachable heels com: prising a heel plate formed with a series of downwardly extending straps of different lengths and tapered at their outer ends, said plate also formed at its forward edge with a copiesof this patent may he obtained for portion of which is partially cutaway, a top lift plate formed in" its upper face with a downwardly" projecting 'iiange, the 'central 7 series of straps of difierent lengths and V tapered at their ends and adapted to enter "between the straps on the heel plate, and a tapered key corresponding in width'to the distance between the inner walls of the ends of the straps 'between which it is entered, said key formed with a downwardly projecting lip,and with a projection near its outer end to engage; with the inner edge of the central portion of the flange on the heel plate.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l r r. y CHARLES OSTEN.
