SHUTTER MECHANISM FOR ENDLESS GONVEYERS AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD G. COBURN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in. Shutter Mechanism for Endless Conveyers and the like, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to shutter mechanism for endless conveyers or the like.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and effective mechanism for readily controlling the movement or flow of various articles, such for example as sand, to an endless conveyer, so as to insure the proper amount of flow and to prevent excessive flow which would result in choking the conveyer mechanism.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical section of a part ofan endless conveyor mechanism and a shutter mechanism therefor embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
In the drawings I show an endless conveyer mechanism having a housing 1 with a vertical side wall 2 and a body 3. Within this housing is shown an endless conveyer having a rotary shaft 4 provided with a pulley or wheel 5 over which a chain or belt 6 carrying buckets 7 travels. The side wall 2 is provided with a side feed opening 8 and an incline 9 in a chute 9 extends through this side wall and opening forwardly from the bottom 3 and outwardly to one side of the housing 1. A box or casing 10 is shown mounted above the chute 9 and a screen 11 is located at the bottom of the box or casing 10 immediately above the chute incline 9. A plate 12 is secured to the side wall 2 at the upper edge of the opening 8 therein, said plate extending outwardly from the wall 2 preferably in a downwardly inclined direction. Said plate 12, however, does not extend to the floor or incline 9, but sufliciently clos thereto to effectually limit the flow of sand or other articles sliding down the incline 9 so as to prevent an excess of such sand or other articles from entering the housing 1, and to protect the shutter from piling sand. A shutter 14 is arranged to control or regulate the flow of sand or other material sliding down the incline 9, such shutter 14 being mounted for movement so as to more or less close the passage 15 left between the edge of the plate 12 and the incline 9. As a convenient arrangement said shutter 14: is mounted for swinging or pivotal movement upon a pivotal shaft 16 extending crosswise of the chute 9 and having its ends supported in side walls of said chute. The shutter 14: is preferably made in more or less V-shape cross section, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby one portion or leg may come into position directly crosswise of the path of travel of the sand or other article down the incline 9, with the edge of such leg contacting with said incline 9. The other leg or side of the shutter doubles or extends forwardly so as to form a cover or top to prevent the sand or Other material from backing up upon said shutter and overflowing the top of the same. Thus an effective closure is provided. This shutter is operated by suitable mechanism, as for example an arm 18 secured to an outside end of the pivotal shaft 16 and a link or lever rod 19 pivotally attached at one end to said arm 18. By adjusting the rod 19 the shutter 14 may be opened or closed or adjusted to any desired intermediate position. The plate 12 also serves as a shield for the shutter or closure 14.
The side wall 2 of the housing 1 is preferably provided with an opening 20 opening into the hopper formed by the chute 9 and box or casing 10, whereby dust may be withdrawn from said hopper'into the housing of the elevator.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
