THOMAS G. PERKINS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,592, dated August 20, 1872.
SPE'cmmATIoN.
I, THOMAS G. PERKINS, of Ohica go, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Ruffler for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification: a
The present invention relates to an improvement in devices to be used on sewing-machines for gathering, ruffling, &c.; and it consists in a lever operated by the needle-bar, and provided with teeth to engage a ratchet forming part of a finger device that operates the plaiter. The movement of the finger may be adjusted to give any desired length of stroke to the feeding-knife or blade.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of myimproved ruffler and gatherer; Fig. 2, a plan or top view of the same.
A represents the frame-work of the attachment, which is fastened to a presser-foot bar, M, in the usual manner, and which is elongated at one end to form a presser-foot, B, and elongated at the opposite end to form a support, I J E, for the part D of the sliding frame D (J to run in, and give the proper movement to the feed-knife or plaiter D to form the gather or ruffle. G represents the lever, which is operated by the needle-bar k in the usual manner,
and which is pivoted to theframe-work I at V,-
and provided with. aratchet, H, which meshes into a ratchet on a finger, n s, so that the movement of the lever operates the finger back and forth in a mortise, r r, of plate D, and moves said frame in one direction. The frame is moved in the opposite direction by means of a finger, h, which is held to the finger n s by a set-screw, P, that holds the finger to the frame I. The upper end of the finger h is provided with a slot to receive a screw, f, secured to ratchet-finger n s, by means of which the finger h can be adjusted with reference to the slot in plate D, so as to move the plate a greater or less distance, as may required to gather the cloth.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The toothed lever G, the ratchet-finger n s, the adjustable fin ger it, their supporting-frame, and the plaiter, all constructed and operating as described.
THOMAS G. PERKINS.
