To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOIIIS Bans, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of Dubois, in the county of Clearfield and State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in valves employed in connection with steam pumps; and the invention has for its object to improve the construction and operation of that class of valves employed in connection with steam pumps, to the end that the valves, stems and the springs may be made cheaper than heretofore while increasing the life of these operating parts.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a water valve stem made of wood, a water valve made of rubber and a valve spring of peculiar shape made of non-corrosive material such as rubber, will be described more fully hereinafter and finally pointed out in the appended claims.

In the operation of steam pumps and espethe ated these parts soon beeon'ie comparatively worn and unserviceable in comparatively a short time. The replacing of the valve stems and springs isnot only expensive but also requires the stopping of the pump.
In my present invention, I I eliminate the conventionally employed metallic water valve stem, and substitute therefor a stem made of non-rusting material such as wood; I eliminate the usually employed metal valve and substitute therefor a valve made of-non- Specification of Letters Patent.

corrosive material such as rubber, and finally I use an elastic spring held upon the valve stem and made of non-corrosive material such as rubber.
In the accompanying drawings l represents a suitable steam pump and the steam chest of the pump. As shown in Fig. 1, the pump is provided witlntwo lowersuction chambers R and two upper discharge chambers 1), these chambers being separated by means of the central housing portion A.
The discharge chamber I) is provided with the discharge port 1. while the lower suction chamber Ii provided with the lower suction port 2 this port being formed in the bottom B of the housing.
As shown in Fig. 1, the upper port 1, is crossed by means of a rib a, while the lower port 2 is crossed by means of the rib 1). Located centrally within the lower rib I) is a socket 3, while passing through the upper rib u. is a cylindrical opening 4 ending in a circular seat 5. Located immediately above the opening 4 is a valve stem plug 6 which is screwed into the top F of the chamber housing. This plug 6 has an adjusting screw 7 an opening 8 being located within the plug 6. As shown in Fig. 1 the diameter of the opening 8 is of a size larger than the opening a but corresponds in sizev to the circular seat 5, the diameter of the opening 4 being of a size similar to the socket 3.
In connection with my invention, I employ a wooden valve stem as shown in Fig. 1, con'iprising a lower cylindrical portion 9 arranged to fit into the opening 4; and socket 3,
the upper cylindrical portion 10 arranged to fit into the opening 8 and into the seat 5. This water valve stem being made of wood will not rust while permitting a free up and down movement of the valve without any appreciable wear of the rubber valve disks 12 and 13 as used in my invention.
The water valve disk 12 is made to fit upon the reduced portion 9 of the valve stem and covers the port 2, while the discharge chamber valve 13 is also made of rubber and arranged to work upon the upper enlarged portion 10 of the wooden valve stem.
