Be it known that I, LEWIS I-I. BULLARD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in punching machines. The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved punching machine provided with a stripper in which the stripper is automatically returned after performing its function, leaving the punch exposed and thus facilitating its adjustment to the work. Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
Afstructure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part .of this specification, in which:

Referring to the drawing, the'body 1 is slotted at 2 to receivethe work, the die 3 being carried by the lower arm of the body, while'the punch 4 is carried by the upper arm. The punch is arranged to reciprocate in the head 5 which is threaded at its upper end to receive the actuating member 6 provided with a removable handle 7. The punch is provided with a disk-like head 8 engaged in the laterally opening slot-like recess .9 in the lower end of the actuating .ters refer to similar parts throughout the V member providing a swivel connection for the actuating member and punch.

punch, engages the stripper and carries it to work engaging position, as shown in Figs. III, IV and V, in which position it is retained by the dogs 19 which reciprocate through holes 20 in the sides of the heads, the dogs being carried inwardly to engaging position by the coiled springs 21, the
dogs and springs being housed by the housing members 15. On the return movement of the plunger these dogs are engaged by the beveled annular shoulder 22 on the punch which carrles or forces them outwardly,
thereby releasing thestripper and allowing it to be retracted by its springs,'so that the end of the punch is left exposed as shown in FigsI and II, facilitating the positioning of the punchon the work.
In punches of this general type'now in quite general use it is necessary to fully retract the punch to strip the work and again advance the punch to projectits end 7 to facilitate the pointing or positioning on the work.
By my improved means the operation of the machine is greatly facilitated, a lesser degree of movement of the punch is required, and the step of advancing it to enable convenient positioning on the work is obviated. The die carrying arm of the body is pro vided with a seat having conical shoulders 23, While the'die 3 is provided with a corresponding or coacting conical shoulder and is held in place by the threaded support 24. This avoids the necessity of threading the die and at the same time the die is properly centered and supported. The advantages of obviating the threading of the die will be appreciated by those skilled in the art.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as I have embodied the same in a hand machine having the threaded actuating member for the .punch. My improvements are, however, adapted and desirable for use in other types or forms of machines. I have not illustrated or described such modifications or adaptations or certain variations in structural details which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates toembody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a punchin machine, the combination of a body provided with a head, a punch actuating member threaded into said head, a punch reciprocating in said head and having swivel engagement with said actuating member, a U-shaped stripper embracing said head, said stripper being advanced to work engaging position by the actuation of the punch and having longitudinal slots in its arms, a pair of T-shaped stripper dogs reciprocating in said head transversely of said punch and stripper arms to coact therewith, said punch being provided with an outwardly racing annular beveled shoulder positioned to release the dogs on the return movement of the punch, permitting the re-- traction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch, actuating springs for said dogs, housing members for said stripper arms and dogs having lugs projecting into said slots, and stripper, return springs arranged in said stripper arm slots and supported by said lugs.
2. In a punching machine, the combina tion of a body provided with a head, a punch reciprocating in said head, a U- shaped stripper embracing said head, said stripper being advanced to work engaging 1position by the actuation of the punch and aving longitudinal slots in its arms, a pair of T-shaped stripper dogs reciprocating in said head transversely of said punch and stripper arms to coact therewith, said punch being provided with an outwardly facing annular beveled shoulder positioned to release the dogs on the return movement of the punch, permitting the retraction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch, ac-
tuating springs for said dogs, housing membracing said head, said stripper being advanced to work engaging position by the actuation of the punch, a pair of stripper dogs reciprocating in said head transversely of said punch and stripper arms to coact therewith, saidpunch being provided with trip means positioned to release the dogs'on the return movement of the punch, permitting the retraction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch, actuating springs for said dogs, and a return spring for said stripper.
4. In a punching machine, the combination of a body provided with a head, a punch reciprocating in said head, a U-shaped stripper embracing said head, said stripper being advanced to work engaging position by the actuation of the punch, a pair of stripper dogs reciprocating in said head transversely of said punch and stripperarms to coact therewith, said punch being provided with trip means positioned to release the dogs on the return movement of the punch, permitting the retraction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch, actuating springs for said dogs, and a return spring for said stripper.
5. Ina punchingmachine, the combination with a body, of a reciprocating punch, a coacting reciprocating stripper, .a stripper dog reciprocating transversely of said punch and stripper, said punch beingiada'pted to release said dog on the return movement of the punch, the'punch being advanced to its work engaging position by the actuation of the punch, and a return spring for said stripper.
6. In a punching machine, the combination with a body, of a reciprocating punch, a coactmg reciprocating stripper, and a stripper dog reciprocating transversely of acting reciprocating stripper adapted to be advanced to work engaging posltion by the actuation of the punch, a holding dog for said stripper, said punch constituting a releasing means for said dog on the return movement of the punch permitting the retraction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch, and a return spring for said stripper. g
8. In a punching machine, the combination of a body, a reciprocating unch, a coacting reciprocating stripper ad apted to be advanced to Work engaging position by the actuation of the punch, and a holding dog for said stripper, said punch constituting a releasing means for said dog on the return movement of the punch permitting the retraction of the stripper to expose the end of the punch.
9. In a punching machine, the combination with a body, of a reciprocating punch, a coacting reciprocating stripper, means for holding said stripper in Work engaging position adapted to be released by the return movement of the punch, permitting the re traction of the stripper, and a return spring for said stripper.
