FOUNTAIN-BRUSH.
Application filed February 20, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER A. GAR- VEY, a citizen of the United States of America, a resident. of Clayton, in the county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Brushes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fountain brushes, the improvement being one designed to control the delivery of liquid from the reservoir of the brush to the tip holder. The means for controlling the flow of liquid to the tip holder is operable automatically to occasion the desired flow, and includes a valve that remains closed when the brush is in upright position, and opens when the brush is tilted into an inclined position, means being provided in proximity to the valve for determining the degree to which the valve opens.
Figure I is an elevation of my fountain brush constructed in the form of a marking brush.
Fig. H is a longitudinal section.
Fig. III is a cross section taken on line Ill-ill, Fig. H.
in the drawings, 1 have shown my brush as a marking brush, but it will be understood that a different form of brush tip from that shown may be used, so that the brush would be suitable for stencil purposes, or other purposes.
A designates a reservoir which may serve as a handle by which the brush is wielded. The reservoir is closed at its upper end, and has fitted to its lower open end a chambered discharge device B to which a tip holder C, containing a tip l), is attached.
The discharge device B has a neck 1 at its upper end-fitting within the reservoir A,
' and connected thereto in any suitable manner, such for xample as by a screw thread upon the neck which engages a screw thread at the interior of the reservoir. Within the discharge device is a transverse web 2 located beneath the neck 1, the said web containing an orifice 3 which is preferably tapered and has its largest end lowermost. This orifice provides communication between the reservoir A and the interior of the discharge device B through which liquid is supplied to the tip D.
E designates a valve by which the flow of Specification of Letters Patent.

. liquid from the reservoir'to the interior of the discharge device B is controlled. This valve comprises a stem 4 having a head 5 at its upper end. The head of the valve is adapted to rest upon the web 2 of the discharge device around the orifice 3 therein, while the stem of the valve hangs suspended through said orifice into the discharge device and is adapted to move laterally in said orifice when the brush is tilted and the valve is tilted due to the tilting of the brush. The tapering of the orifice 8 readily permits the tilting movement of the valve stem. and consequently of the head of the valve, so that the valve head will be adjusted into an inclined position relative to the seat therefor provided by the top surface of the web 2.
F designates an adjustable device for controlling the degree towhich-the valve E is permitted to tilt. This adjustable device F is preferably in the form of a screw disk fitted to an internal screw thread in the neck 1 of the discharge device B, the plug being adapted to be moved inwardly and outwardly toward the head of the valve E. If
\ the plug is moved into close proximity with the head of the valve, it serves to restrict the tilting. of the valve so that its head may be only slightly tilted away from its seat on the web 2, whereas if the plug is receded farther from the head of the valve a greater degree of tilting movement of the valve will be permitted, with a correspondingly increased opportunity for flow of liquid past the head cf the valve and through the orifice 3. he adjustable device F is provided with one or more apertures 6 permitting passage of liquid therethrougi and is preferably supplied with a linger piece 7, by which it may be manipulated in adjusting it relative to the head of the valve E.
I claim:
i. In a fountain marking device, the cornbination of a reservoir, a discharge device associated with said reservoir having an orilice therein through which liquid may flow to supply a marking tip, and a valve extending through said orifice adapted to tilt in response to tilting of said reservoir.
2. in a fountain marking device, the combination of a reservoir, a discharge device associated with said reservoir having an oriflee therein through which liquid may low to supply a marking tip, a valve extending through said orifice adapted to tilt in response to tilting of said reservoir, and an movement of said valve.
3. In a fountain marking device, the combination of a reservoir, a discharge device associated with said reservoir, having a Web containing an orifice through which liquid may flow and a valve adapted to tilt in response to tilting of said reservoir, said valve having a head resting on said web and a stem suspended from said head.
4:. In a fountain brush, the combination of areservoir, a discharge device associated with said reservoir, a Web having an orifice therein through Which liquid may flow from said reservoir to said discharge device, a
. valve having a head resting on said web and a stern tiltable in said orifice to tilt said head on said web, and an adjustable device for controlling the tilting movement of said valve.
5. In a fountain brush, the combination of a reservoir, a discharge device associated with said reservoir, a Web having an orifice therein through which liquid may flow from said reservoir to said discharge device, a valve having a head restin on said Web and a stem'tiltable in said orifice to tilt said head on said Web, and a disk adjustably secured to said discharge device by which the 1 CHRISTOPHER A.
