ATTACHMENT Fon WELL-mums.
'Be it known that I, ALYIN J. ESHENBAUGH,
{"a citizen `ofthe United States, residing at Shamrock, in the county of Creek and State 1r'of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Well- Drills, of which the followingis a specification. v
This invention relates to an attachment -for well drills, contemplating particularly the provision of means for rewinding the cables used in various drilling operations back onto the spools on which they are origi- The various cables used in drillin operatlons, such as the drill cable, torpe o measurinng line or cable, etc., are initially wound upo supply spools or reels, from whichthey are'removed and applied to the-bull wheel, torpedo or measuring line reel, etc., for use in the drilling work. After the wellis drilled thecables 'are again rewound upon the supply 'spools or reels for convenient transportation to the point where the next well is to be drilled. l
The object of my invention is to provide means in the form of an attachment whereby a supply spool or reel may be driven from the band wheel of the drill rig for the purpose of rewinding the drill or other cable thereon.
Another obj ect is to provide means where-A by a small spool or reel may be directly rotated from the band wheel for rewinding a shorter or smaller cable, such as a torpedo or measuring line, upon its spool.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement f of parts, hereinafter fully described yand claimed, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, in which VFigure l is a side elevation of so much of a drilling apparatus as is necessary to illusspool or reel.
I partly in long I 4 l -v ithlthe, driven pulley mounted thereon; i'
.trate the invention, showing the attachment employedI for rewinding a main cable upon its supply spool.A 1 v Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the dr1ve pulley which is applied to the crank shaft of the bandwheel. t
Figc@ is a perspective view of the driven pulley whichgfi` w, partly in elevation Fig. 4: is a; linaljsection', of the `suppl.A
spool or reel Specification of Letters Patent.
'ounted'upon the supply.. winding the cable 6 therefrom onto a wor spool or lreel and afterward rewinding fthe cable` from said Working spool or reel back upon the supply spool or reel.
' Patented June s, 1919.
Application filed July 30, 1918. Serial No. 247,414.'
fFig. 5 is a topplan view of the band wheel and its shaft, showing the use of the drive pulley as a support for a spool or reel -on which a cable is to be wound.
Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section through the spool or reel shown in Figs. 5 and Gand through the drive pulley.
'Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the band wheel of a drilling apparatus; 2 the crank shaft on which it is mounted, said shaft being provided one end with a Crank arm 3 for communicating motion to a walking' beam or other drill-tool actuating part 'of the apparatus.; 4.a band or belt by which the band wheel 1 is driven from the motor or engine of the drilling apparatus; and 5 the bully wheel or other wheel or drum on which a trate the mode of us ref the present 1nvention, the reel 5 may be"eitherthebull wheel, the measuring ,line reel, the torpedo line reel, or anyothenworking spool or reel of the drilling apparatus, and the cable 6 may represent any of the cables commonly emv ployed.
7 denotes a supply drum or spool on which the cable 6 is initially wound, for transportation from the factory to the drill operator, and which is commonly employed by the drill operator to receive the cable, which is wound thereon from a working spool after the drilling operation is completed, to enable the cavie to be removed from the drilling apparatus and shipped to the next point of use. This spool or reel 7 is shown mounted upon a shaft 8 journaled in suitable bearings-9 upon a frame work 10, which may be a part of the frame Work ofthe drilling apparatus, whereby said spool or reel`is' rotatably supported for thev purpose of un- The object ofjlny invention is tol provide'l theatres means whereby the supply spool or reel f7 may be driven 'from a working part of theV drill mechanism, in this instance the shaft 2 of the band wheel 1, tor the purpose ot` rewinding),` the cable (3 Jfrom the working spool or passage 15 for a purpose hereinafter de- 'lhe arm 12 is employed for the f scribed. purpose of fastening the pulley 11 upon the crank arin 3 of the band wheel shaft 9;, so that the axisof the pulley 11 willbe in alinenient with the axis ot said shaft, 'for the purpose of properly transmitting motion to a drive belt .or cable 1G. rthe arm 12 is tas-l, tened to the crank shaft arm 3 `by means ot' kbolts 17 which pass through the openings l 13 in the arm 1Q 'and through eorrespending openings in the arm 3.
lFor the purpose of driving,` reel 7 from the pulley 11 by 4 belt 1G I also provide a driven pulley 18 fory application tov one end of the spool 7; This pulleyfis in the yform of a. peripherally ,ig'iooi'ed annulus, adapted to tit about eine ond of the shaft 8 and haying an inner'rnn portion' 1t)V of slightly increased diameter with respect to its outer rim portion and the spool or Ameans of the itat-surfaced to bear against the adjacent.
end of the spool y7. Openings 20 are provided at intervals in this rim. portion 19 for the passage of nails or other suitable tasteir ings 21 to secure the pulley .18 in position.
In the use of the rewinding attachment, itis to be understood that after the drilling operation is vcompleted and it is desired to rewind a working cable 6 from a working spool or reel bach` onto the supply spool or reel. 7 the spool or proper juxtaposition relative to the spool 5 and the'drive belt or cable 16, which is pret-- 'erably crossed, arranged to engage the pul- -le-ys y11 and 18, so that when the band wheelA 1 is driven fronithe motor of the drilling apparatus the spool 7 will berotated to wind the cable 'thereon. For this purpose, the -free end of the cable 6 is'passed over suitable guide'pulleys 22 on the drillingapparatus and led from the spool to the spool 7 to which it-is suitably t'asteued, so that in the rotation of the drinn 7 the cable will be nnwound from the spool. and onto the spool 7, after which `the opposite end of the cable may be properly secured in position.r The cable will thus be disconnected troni the drilling7 i'ilsr and inay be coni'eniently shipped to tho nexiwpoint t'or use. it will` oi course. be understood that the pulley 11 may la disconnected `from the crank arm ii after cach rcwiinlinger operation and until adjusted position.
reel 7 1s mounted in itsl usev isagain required, and that the pulley 18 vmay beiapplied to the spool 7 for use when required and afterward removed.
It is desirable to provide a means whereby a 'short cable, such as a measuring line ortorpedo line, may be convenient-ly rewound upon its spool or reel or lowered t'or use. or rewouiifd 'upon a supply reel or spool while one of, the longer working cables, such as the drilling line, is being rewound troni the bull wheel onto its supply reel. To this end l proride means whereby a small reel, ,such as a` torpedo or :measuringl line reel may be supported directly upon the crankshaft 2 by l ineans oit Athe pulley attachment 1l. As stated the pulley 11 hasl its hub 11 provided with an 'opening 15. Through this lopeningmaybe passed the threaded end 2l ot' a shaft E25 on which thereel 23 is mounted. the oppo site end of said shaft beingprovided witha head 2G to bearagainst one side of said reel.
T he threaded end'oiI the'shaft projects sut` tieiently/beyond the opposite side of the rcel to be passed through the opening 15 in the hub 1&1 of' the pulley 11 and to receive a clamping nut 27 whereby it may be iXed in By slackei'iing thisnut the drinn 2 3 may be free' for rotation on the shaft Q5 to pay out, let down or unwind thc cable 28, and by tightening the nut the drinn may be clamped againstthe pulley 11 and tiXed thereto with the shaft 25, so'that thel said drinn will rotate with the sha-ft 2 t'or the purpose oi' winding' up the cable or rewind' ing it from a working spool or reel onto' .the drinn or reel. A convenient means is thus provided for letting down or lowering a torpedo line or measuring line intoa well,1 winding; up the saine, or rini'imlinn` thi` line `from its working spool or reel onto a supply spool or reel for storage or shipment.
Haring thus fully described niyinvcntion, l. claim 1. ln a cable rewinding attachment. for well drills, the 4combination ofV a shaft haw ing` a crank arm, a band wheel mounted on said'shaft, a working reel, a supply rcel. a drive pulley mounted upon the crank arm of the crank shaft, a driven pulleymount ed upon one side ofthe supply reel, and a belt connecting saidpulleyswhereby a cable may be unwound Jfrom the working reel and onto the supply reel.
