Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 22, 1918. Serial No. 235,990.
To all whom it may concern wheel Be it known thatiI, DAVID LEMON TOWLER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Newark, in the county of Essex and tate of New Jersey, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Wheel-Pullers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in ullers.
An important object of this invention is to provide a wheel puller adapted for use in connection with wheels of different sizes, said wheel puller having adjustable arms adapted to engage the perlphery of the wheel at different points.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wheel puller arranged on a movable carriage to permit of the easy movement of the device to an operative position, with respect to the wheel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described,
which is expeditious in use, of highly simplified construction and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description. 1

is secured to the standard 11 by bolts 15.
An extension 16, formed on one end of the U-shaped bracket 10, is hollow at its outer end for the reception of an adjustable arm 17 curved, as shown, to engage the upper portion of the Wheel. A set screw 18, having threaded engagement with the extension 16 on one side thereof, is adapted to engage the arm 17 to hold the same in a set position. Extending from the bottomportion of the U-shaped bracket are outwardly diverging arms 19, having adjustable end portions 20 curved, as shown, to engage the bottom portion of the wheel. Sleeves 22 extending over the arms 19 and the adjustable end portions thereof, carry bolts 23 in threaded engagement therewith and extending through elongated slots in the ends of the arms 19.
As shown in Fig. 2, the bracket 10 is provided with an opening extending longitudinally therethrough and adapted for the reception of a slidable plate 24, having a centrally arranged screw threaded opening 25. An arched support 25 having rigid connection with the bracket 10 extends outwardly therefrom and is provided with a centrally arranged screw threaded opening 26' alining with the screw threaded opening 25 of the plate 24, and is adapted for the reception of a screw 26, having a head 27 As shown, the screw 26 has threaded engagement with the arched support and plate 24 and has its end 28 arranged between the spaced arms of the U-shaped bracket 10. To permit of the screw 26 having its longitudinal axis being brought into alinement with the longitudinal axis of the axle, the plate 24 is adjustable vertically in the bracket 10, and is adapted to be held in a set position by set screws 29. Slots 30 and 31 in thefbracket 10 are aranged on opposite sides of the plate 24 and permit of the vertical movement of the screw 26. Elongated openings in the outer portion of the bracket 10, designated by the numeral 32, permit of the vertical movement of the arch with the plate 24.
In applying the device to a wheel the arms 17 and 20 are engaged with the sides of the wheel, as shown. :Tlhe screw 26 is now brought into alinement with the axle and by turning the screw, it is obvious that the wheel will be pulled from the axle.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
1. A wheel puller comprising, a body portion; adjustable arms carried by the body -portion and adapted to engage the periphery of the wheel; a plate slidably arranged within the body portion; a screw carried by the plate and having threaded engagement therewith and adapted to engage the end of an axle; and means to hold the plate in a set position.
2. A wheel puller, comprising a U-shaped body'portion; an adjustable arm carried by the upper side of the body portion and adapted to engage the upper side of the wheel; outwardly diverging arms carried by the lower portion of the U-shaped body portion and adapted to engage the lower side of the wheel; a vertically disposed plate slidably arranged within the U-shaped body portion; a screw carried by the plate and having threaded engagement therewith and adapted to engage one end of an axle; means to reitem the plate in an adjusted position; and
within the U-shaped body portion; a screw carried by the plate and having threaded engagement therewith and adapted to enga one end'oi an axle; and means to retain t e plate in adjusted position.
4. A wheelpuller comprising a U-shaped body portion, a movable carriage supporting the U-shaped body portion; an adjustable arm carried'by the body portionand adapted to engage the upper side of the wheel; outwardly diverging longitudinally 1 adjustable arms carried by the lower portion of the U-shaped body portion and adapted to engage the lower side of the wheel, a vertically disposed plate slidably arranged within the U-shaped body portion; a screw carried by the plate and having threaded engagement therewith and adapted to engage one end of an axle; and means to retain the plate in an adjusted position.
